QUANTIFIERS

LEVEL 4- UNIT 9 NATURE


ARTICLES
 Use a/an:

 The first time something is mentioned.


 Before singular nouns.
 With jobs.
 Use the:

 When there is only one of something.


 When something has been mentioned before.
 With seas, oceans, rivers and country names that
are plural.
 Before the names of some areas.
 With superlatives.
 With some defining expressions.
 In some phrases with prepositions.
 With dates in spoken English.
 Use no article:

 To talk generally about things or people.


 With most names of towns, cities, and countries.
 Before plural nouns.
 In some phrases with prepositions.
 With sports.
QUANTIFIERS
 Use some and any when talking about ‘a limited
amount/ number’ (not a large or small
amount/number). We often use some in positive
sentences and in some questions, especially in
requests and offers.

 We often use any in negatives and questions.


 We use much and many un questions and
negatives. Much is used with large amounts of an
uncountable noun. Many is used with large
numbers of a countable nouns.

 All means ’everything/everyone’. We can use it


with or without of.
 We use a lot, lots of, and plenty of with large
amounts/numbers. We usually use this in positive
sentences. Plenty of means ‘more than enough’.

 Too and too much/ many mean ‘more than


necessary’. We use much with uncountable
nouns. We use many with countable nouns.
 Enough means ‘as much as we need’. We use it in
positive and negative sentences and questions.

 None and no can mean ‘zero’ We use none of +


noun/pronoun. We use no + noun (without article
or possessive adjective)
 A few means ‘a small number’. We use it with
countable nouns and usually in positive
sentences.

 A little and a bit of means ‘a small amount’. We


use them with uncountable nouns and usually in
positive sentences.
