SENTENCES WITH ONE

CLAUSE
1. A sentence has a subject and a
verb
 Makesure that a sentence should have a
subject and a verb.
 Becareful of sentences without a subject
or verb, with double subjects or verbs.
Subject of a Sentence

The subject is always a noun, pronoun, or one of the other


nouns shown in these examples.

Verbs
The verb can be in the form of “to be”; base form, present
verb ( Verb+ s/es), past verb, modals, past participle and
present participle.

verb +s/es Courtesy demands prompt apology.
past The children enjoyed the exciting movie.
modal To get angry might not be a solution.
past participle The program has already begun.
present participle Scientists are studying herbs to cure the disease.

2. An object of preposition is not a subject.
An object of preposition is a noun or pronoun that comes after a
preposition, such as in, on, at, to, by, behind, beside, with,
without, about, as, against, except, etc, to form a prepositional
phrase.

The neighbors across the street have four dogs.


This sentence has a 1 prepositional phrase, across the street. The
street is the object of preposition across. It is not the subject of
the sentence.
The subject is the neighbors.

3. An appositive is not a subject.

An appositive is a noun that comes before or after another


noun and has the same meaning.
Sentence Patterns:

A stimulant, caffeine is found in both coffee and tea.

4. Present participles can be a verb or
an adjective.
A Present Participle is the – ing form of the verb.
A present participle is a verb when it is accompanied by
some form of the verb be ( am, is, are, was, were, be,
been, being) A present participle is an adjective when it is
not accompanied by some form of the verb be.
The students are watching a film. ( a verb)
The students watching a film are very happy. (an adjective)

5. Past participles can be a verb or an
adjective.
A Past Participle is Verb III.
A past participle is a verb when it is accompanied by some form of the verb be
( am, is, are, was, were, be, been, being) and have ( have, has, had, having).
The hospital for the infectious disease has employed a number of doctors.
The hypothesis is supported by the data.

A past participle is an adjective when it is not accompanied by some form of the


verb be and have.
