However, if there was an extreme reason for late work, please come talk to me.
FOR THE
CLASSROO
M
Emergency preparedness
◦ Listen and know the school-wide rules and guidelines for every type of
emergency.
◦ Prepare an Emergency Evacuation Binder
◦ Post a school map with the highlighted evacuation route.
◦ Prepare a transition activity to help students return to learning after a drill.
Getting your students’ attention
◦ When class is ready to begin or if I need their attention…
◦ I will silently raise my hand, waiting for all eyes on me.
◦ When everyone is sitting quietly and eyes on me, I will begin talking. (HEALTH & WELLNESS)
◦ Once students enter the gym, I will instruct students to meet in front of me to discuss the how the class period will
go.
◦ I will use this technique (raising hand) in PE as well, I will also expect when the students to stop what they are
doing and have all eyes, ears, on me when the music stops if it is playing at the moment.
Classroom jobs
◦ In my opinion, grades 9-12, most students volunteer to help and/or do jobs within the classroom
and PE classroom.
◦ For PE, those who enter the gym first for the day-– I will ask if any of them could help set up
whatever equipment is needed or isn’t already set up yet.
◦ In K-6 classes, students will be grouped by color squads.
◦ I will instruct those different jobs such as; clean up crew!
◦ In Health & Wellness, if the room is being rearranged for the day– I delegate a few students to
help.
Classroom phone ringing
◦ If I am unable to answer the phone at the moment, I will assign one specific student per
class period to be the phone answerer.
◦ This student will have this job throughout the semester. (Health & Wellness)
Bathroom breaks
◦ On my desk, I will have a bathroom sign-out sheet:
◦ Students will come to my desk and write the time they are leaving to go to the bathroom, as well as
the time they return.
◦ If a trend is occurring where certain students are abusing this privilege, privileges will be lost.
◦ Only one student at a time may use the sign-out sheet. (Health & Wellness)
◦ In PE class, all students will be encouraged to use the bathroom before class in the locker room.
◦ Breaks will only be allowed during emergencies.
Replacing dull/broken pencils
◦ I will provide a pencil sharpener in the classroom.
◦ I will provide extra pencils behind my desk for those who need it. (Health & Wellness)
Keeping desks orderly
◦ Everything has a place & purpose
◦ For Health & Wellness (9-12), I would assume there would either be more so collaboration tables, or
desks with no storage beneath them. In this case, I will provide baskets of different writing utensils such
as; highlighters, pencils, pens, etc.
◦ For PE, I expect their gym lockers to be kept clean as well as the space around it.
Collecting & returning papers
◦ When collecting papers, I will instruct students to pass their papers, homework, etc.,
across the rows, not up columns (columns lead to problems).
◦ Students must be paying attention when collecting papers to ensure that none are dropped
in the process.
◦ Once the papers have reached the end of the row, the student at the end will either bring
the stack to me or wait for myself to pick up the papers.
◦ When returning papers (in hopes that they were picked up in order), they will be given
back in the same order.
Classroom transitions
◦ Within my lesson plans, I will PLAN OUT smooth transitions– for both PE and
Health/Wellness.
◦ For Health & Wellness, I will introduce my transition cues that will be used in my class,
such as; ringing a bell or a hand-clap rhythm.
◦ I will always tell students how much time they will be given to work on an activity or
assignments.
Depending on the class, I may allow the remainder of time for other homework OR give them “my life is
on my mind time” other wise the remainder of the time can be used for whatever they feel.
Missing assignment slips
◦ I will give tell students what “Pink-slips” are on the first day of class.
◦ Students will be given pink slips if they come to class without their
assignments.
◦ On these slips, there will be fill in the blanks for:
◦ Date, name, class section, missing assignment and checkboxes for the student to
indicate the reason for not doing the homework.
Daily closing message
◦ Communication on a weekly basis
◦ At the end of each class period, I will review some of the key points we went over in class, discuss
what the homework/assignments are, and remind students about future projects and their due dates.
(Health & Wellness)
◦ At the end of each class period, I will review what we did in class, go over new skills and
techniques learned, ask for feedback and positives about the day, and give them future class
announcements. (PE)
◦ For example, ”Bring sweatpants or warmer clothes for next class period because we will be going outside
for the tennis unit”
Guideline infraction notice
◦ Preparation and consistency are KEY ◦ Continued
◦ If there are classroom issues… ◦ Space for filling out details of offense
◦ I will create a Guideline Infraction Notice on ◦ Student signature line
cardstock and/or colored paper in the shape of a ◦ Parent signature line
“Stop” sign and call them “Pause slips”. ◦ Date of occurrence
◦ On these slips: ◦ Space for filling in the results of the student –
◦ Check boxes to indicate your instruction to the teacher conference
student
◦ “Please correct your behavior”
I will be able to address the
◦ “Please return to your task”
◦ See me after class issues privately, express
concerns, and workout solutions
with the student!
Morning meetings
◦ Preparation and consistency are KEY
◦ Morning meetings do not necessarily pertain to PE or Health & Wellness – however
if I did have a set group of students that I met with every morning, I would have a
daily starting activity as well as lay out the plan for the day. I would also use this
time to check-in with my students!
