Communication

 Communication can be defined as the exchange of ideas, information, and knowledge


between sender and receiver through an accepted code of symbols.
Communication

 It is a process that allows organisms to exchange information by several methods


 Exchange requires feedback
 It is the articulation of sending a message, whether it be verbal or nonverbal
 It is the process of meaningful interaction among human beings
 It is the process by which any message is given or received through talking, writing, or making gestures
Note: There are auditory means, such as speaking, singing and sometimes tone of voice, and nonverbal,
physical means, such as body language, sign language, paralanguage, touch, eye contact, or the use of
writing.

Intrapersonal communication

 Intrapersonal communication is the one which you have with yourself.


 Through this, you talk with, learn about, and judge yourself.
 You persuade yourself of something, reason about possible decision, rehearse messages
that you plan to convey to others.
Interpersonal communication

 Interpersonal communication is communication between two persons or among a small


group of persons.
 It is usually among intimates or those involve in close relationships, e.g. family, friends,
co-workers.
 Sometimes it is pleasant, but it may erupt into conflicts too.
Interviewing

 Interviewing is communication that proceeds by question and answer.


 Through this, you learn about others and what they know, you counsel or get counselling from others, etc.
 These days most of the initial interviewing takes place through emails or calls.
 Its skills are similar to those of interpersonal and small group communication.
Small group communication

 Small group communication is communication among members of groups (5 to 10


members).
 IT serves relationship needs e.g. companionship, affection, or support.
 Through this, you interact with others, solve problems, develop new ideas, and share
knowledge and experiences.
Organizational communication

 Organizational communication is communication that takes place within an organization


among members of organization.
 E.g. conferencing with colleagues, working in teams, talking with supervisor, or giving
directions to employees.
 Through this, you can improve your own formal and informal communication in
organizational settings.
Public speaking

 Also known as public communication or presentational speaking.


 Public speaking is communication between a speaker and audience.
 Range of audience may vary i.e. several to hundreds to thousands.
 Through this, you can persuade, inform or entertain others (PIE).
 Public speaking can be done face-to-face or electronically through mass media, e.g. speech, blogs, etc.
Computer-mediated communication (CMC)

 Cmc is a general term that includes all forms of communication through computers, electronic, or internet
connection.
 E.g. email, texting, blogging, tweeting, etc.
 All of these cmc forms, like their face-to-face counterparts, are used both socially and in the world of
business.
 IT can be asynchronous i.e. not taking place in real time, or synchronous i.e. occurring at the same time.
 It is largely text-based rather than voice-based.
Mass communication

 Mass communication is communication from one source to many receivers, who may be
scattered throughout the world.
 It takes place via newspapers, magazines, television, radio, or videos.
