Therapeutic Equipment Maintenance

Lecture 02
General Introduction

Semester II, 2020|2021

08 June, 2020 ~ 12 Sept, 2020

13 June, 2020
General Introduction
1. Introduction
2. Basic Concept
Therapeutic Equipment Maintenance, lecture 2 By Eng. A.J. Issa @ SHMS 2020
Introduction
• Medical devices are assets that directly
affect human lives.
• An article, instrument, apparatus or
machine that is used in the prevention,
diagnosis or treatment of illness or disease,
or for detecting, measuring, restoring,
correcting or modifying the structure or
function of the body for some health
purpose.

Introduction…
• They are considerable investments and in
many cases have high maintenance costs.
• It is important, therefore, to have a well
planned and managed maintenance
programmed that is able to keep the
medical equipment in a health-care
institution reliable, safe and available for
use when it is needed for diagnostic
procedures, therapy, treatments and
monitoring of patients.

Introduction…
• In addition, such a programmed prolongs
the useful life of the equipment and
minimizes the cost of equipment
ownership. A maintenance strategy
includes procedures for inspection, as well
as preventive and corrective maintenance.
• Medical devices requiring calibration,
maintenance, repair, user training and
decommissioning

Basic Concept
The followings are the basic terms which are used
in mechanics
•Mass: The quantity of the matter possessed by a
body is called mass. The mass of a body can not
change unless the body is damaged and part of it
is physically separated.
•Time: Time is the measure of succession of
events. The successive event selected is the
rotation of earth about its own axis and this is
called a day.

Basic Concept…
• Length: It is a concept to measure linear
distances.
• Space: Any geometric region in which the study
of a body has been done is called space.
• Displacement: It is defined as the distance
moved by a body/particle in the specified
direction.
• Velocity: The rate of change of displacement
with respect to time is defined as velocity.
• Acceleration: It is the rate of change of velocity
with respect to time.

13 June 2020 7
Basic Concept…
• FORCE: Force can be a push or a pull. For
example, if you pull on the handle of a wagon or
cart you are exerting a pulling force. Also, if you
push a door open, you are exerting a pushing
force on the door.
• Friction: Is the force which opposes motion
when one surface slides upon another
• WORK: Work is force over a distance. For
example, lifting a bucket of water requires you to
exert a pulling force on the handle to lift it off the
ground.

Basic Concept…
• Energy: Is the capacity of a body for doing
work.
• Potential energy is the energy in a body
due to its position. While kinetic energy is
the energy in a body due to its motion
• Momentum: The product of mass and
velocity is called momentum. Thus
Momentum = Mass × Velocity

Basic Concept…
• A body is said to be rigid if it retain its shape
and size even if the external forces
are applied on it. It is called a rigid body.
• The distance between any two given points
on a rigid body remain constant in time
regardless of external forces exerted on it.
• Rigid body mechanics is father divide into
static (body at rest) and dynamic (body in
motion)

13 June 2020 10
Basic Concept…
• Statics is the study which deals with the
condition of bodies in equilibrium subjected to
external forces.
• In other words, when the force system acting on
a body is balanced, the system has no external
effect on the body, the body is in equilibrium.
• Dynamics is also a branch of mechanics in
which the forces and their effects on the bodies
in motion are studied. Dynamics is sub-divided
into two parts: (1) Kinematics and (2) Kinetics

13 June 2020 11
Basic Concept…
• Kinematics deals with the geometry of
motion of bodies without and application of
external forces.
• Kinetics deals with the motion of bodies
with the application of external forces.

13 June 2020 12
Basic Concept…
• Deformable body mechanics is a
deformation of a body under the action of
a forces
• Deformable body mechanics father divided
into
- strength of material,
- theory of elasticity and
- theory of plasticity

Basic Concept…
• Hydromechanics is the study which deals
with the conditions of fluid under which it
can remain at rest or in motion.
Hydromechanics can be divided into
hydrostatics and hydrodynamics.
• Hydrostatics is the study of fluid at rest.
• Hydrodynamics is the study of fluid in
motion.
