3 INPUT DATA
 A 2D frame with 2 spans of 4 m and the height of 5 m
 The elements have constant cross-section of 0.4x0.4 m
 The material has the following characteristics:
Modulus of Elasticity: E = 2100000 kN/m²
Poisson’s Ratio:  = 0.3
 The critical damping ratio is considered ζ=0.05
 The lumped mass of the structure is m=200 tones.
4 2D FRAME
5 Description of Work done
 This 2D Frame (MDOF) problem was solved using analysis from
SAP2000 and ETABS. A MATLAB program was also used to
analysis the frame.
 The results have been indicated the slides following.

11 EQUATIONS OF MOTION (Cont)
  The frame has the following dynamic characteristics:
T= 0.878 sec
f= 1.29 Hz
ω= 7.0675 rad/sec

 The form of the matrix A and B become:

12 Free Damped Vibrations Response of SDOF
Model with Initial Conditions
  Observe that the amplitude reduces exponentially with respect to time;
 Amplitude =
 The natural logarithm (logarithm to the base e) of the ratio of amplitudes of two successive
cycles is constant which is known as logarithmic decrement;
13 Harmonic Underdamped Vibrations
Response of SDOFM
 Force input function of the harmonic excitation is the harmonic function, i.e. functions of
sines and cosines.
 This type of excitation is common to many system involving rotating and reciprocating
motion. Moreover, many other forces can be represented as an infinite series of harmonic
functions.
 By the principle of superposition, the response is the sum of the individual harmonic
response.
14 Harmonic Underdamped Vibrations
Response of SDOFM
15 Harmonic Overdamped Vibrations
Response of SDOFM
 Undamped system oscillates at a constant amplitude as predicted by the theory but the
response is not harmonic because of the superposition of initial condition response (0
phase lag)

 Damped system behavior is similar to the undamped system except that the initial
condition response decays in time so that the system finally oscillates at the steady-state
response as predicted by theory (approximately 0 phase lag)

27 CONCLUSION

 The free vibration response in terms of displacements and velocities for the DDOFs 1 and
2 have been shown in the above graphs and results. This shows the stick model with
Rayleigh type proportional damping.
 Also the results from the different software applications showed different results for the
period of vibrations, the frequencies and the displacements.
