1
SIGNAL TO NOISE RATIO

Signal to noise analysis is daily QC basis. We apply the bottom mute before the shot first break time to be used as
inferior limit of ambient noise. Thus GeoEast calculate RMS amplitude value of ambient noise.
We also apply the top mute after the shot first break time to be used as limit for signal. Thus GeoEast calculate
RMS amplitude value of signal.

Then we calculate the signal to noise ratio (SNR) by applying this formula:

SNR = 20*Log10(RMS Signal) – 20*Log10(RMS Noise)

Or

SNR = 20*Log10(RMS Signal/RMS Noise)

On Windy Weather (Record Date : 25th January 2017)

Average RMS Amplitude = 0.02 mV

On Normal Weather (Record Date : 18th January 2017)

Average RMS Amplitude = 0.01 mV 3

CONCLUSION

• The average of RMS amplitude value of ambient noise (wind blown effect) are 0.02 mV, while the average of
RMS amplitude value of signal are higher than 1.5 mV
• SNR of each windy shots are higher than 20, which means the ambient noise (wind blown effect) did not
significantly interfere the signal
• The RMS amplitude value of ambient noise (wind blown effect) even weaker than weak shot signal on January
22nd

NOTES

Traditionally, the old saying is that seismic data starts with geophone plant. Wind blown effect on today
production data is not harmful for data processing, but such effect can be reduced or eliminated. One of the best
practice to eliminate such effect are by clearing any grass, sticks, or leaves that might touch the geophone or
cable. And also by improving the quality of geophone plant, the well-planted geophone (good coupling) will
reduce the wind blown effect in almost all cases.
