COACHING

WHO IS A COACH?
A coach is:
• A motivator and teacher of an athlete;
• A moulder of theoretical and practical
training; and
• A translator of technical information
COACH-ATHLETE
COMPATIBILITY
Situation in which the coach’s behavior is
compatible with the athletic desires and vice
versa.
COACHING COMPETENCIES OR
MANAGERIAL COMPETENCIES
• Conceptual competency
Leader’s ability to integrate information and make
judgments using number of relevant factors.
• Human competency
Leaders or coaches power of persuasion and ability
to establish harmonious relationship within a team.
• Technical competency
Individuals knowledge and expertise in a specific
group task, its processes; that is knowledge of the
skills, strategies, and tactics of a sport, its rules,
and regulations.
COACHING BEHAVIOR
The function of the coach’s own
characteristics such as personality, ability
and experience as well as the influence of
the situation in the coach operates.
STYLES OF COACHING
BEHAVIOR
1. Training and Instruction Behavior
2. Democratic Behavior
Allows greater participation by athletes in
decisions pertaining to group goals, practice
methods, game tactics, and strategies.
3. Autocratic Behavior
Involves independent decision making and
stresses the personal authority of the coach but
not of the athlete.

BEHAVIOR
4. Social Behavior
Characterized by a concern for the welfare
of individual athletes, a positive group
atmosphere and warm interpersonal relations
with members of the group or team.
5. Rewarding Behavior
Reinforces an athlete by recognizing
performances.
TRAINING
An exercise program designed to assist
the learning of skills, to improve physical
fitness, and thereby to prepare an athlete
for a particular competition.

It includes conditioning, specific technical


training, and psychological preparation.
PRACTICE
The repetition of techniques and skills,
after taken out of the context of a whole
game or event, so that they may be
improved.
Practice which is staggered over several
short sessions in more effective than one
long session.
SPECIFIC TRAINING
Training in which techniques and skills
are rehearsed in situations similar to those
expected in competition.
DEFENSE
The team or player trying to prevent the
opposing team or players from making
points.
TYPES OF DEFENSE
(BASKETBALL)
1. Man-to-Man
A type of defense where a player is
responsible for guarding a specific opponent.
2. Zone
A type of defense where the players
protect or guard a particular area in the court.
3. Match-up Zone
A team defense which combines the
principle of a man-to-man team defense with
the principles of a zone defense.
TYPES OF DEFENSE
(BASKETBALL)
4. Trap
A defensive maneuver done by more than
one defensive player against an offensive
player with the ball, to either take away the
ball from his possession, prevent him from
taking a shot, making an easy pass to his
teammates, stop dribbling, or limit the space
where he could go.
OFFENSE
Individual and team moves which attack the
opponent basket. The team or player in
possession of the ball and trying to score.
Functions of a COACH-TRAINER
1. Helps in scouting top caliber athletes
2. Designs comprehensive training program that must be
scientifically imparted to athletes
3. Acts as a role model for others to follow and commits
himself to the athletes
4. Hones athlete’s competitiveness through
training/scrimmage/exposures etc. and imposes to the
performance of individuals or team events.
5. Leads athletes from local to national tussles.
6. Concentrates on improving his coaching career by
attending trainings, clinics, extensive reading and actual
coaching stints.
7. Stands back and share others credit.
8. Talks of “we” and “us” not “you” and “them”.
9. Performs other related tasks assigned to him/her.

2. Observe their attitude and performance;

3. Align them with their strengths for peak performance;

4. Communicate and give feedback about performance;

5. Help them improve their lives and performance.
