WHAT IS A LIBRARY?
 A place in which literary, musical, artistic, or reference materials (books, manuscripts,
recordings, or films) are kept for use.(American Heritage Dictionary)
 A place in which literary and artistic materials such as books, periodicals,
newspapers, pamphlets, prints, records and tapes are kept for reading, reference or
lending (Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary)
 A collection of books, periodicals, musical scores, films, phonograph records, etc.,
especially a large, systematically arranged collection for reading or reference.
 A room or building where such collection is kept (Webster’s New World College
Dictionary)

 A professional licensed teacher who was assigned by the school head/ principal to
be in-charge of the school library.
 May or may have units in library science
 A person who holds recognized teaching qualifications and qualifications in
librarianship (Australian Library and Information Association)
 A person assigned with both instructing students and managing an effective and
accessible library within a school
 Also called School librarian, library media specialist or para-librarians (American Library
Association)
WHAT IS A TEACHER-LIBRARIAN?
 With the growing demands of information technology and the
emphasis on life-long learning, the teacher-librarian can be the
classroom teacher’s most valuable asset for instructional planning. No
longer viewed as “keepers and organizers” of library materials, teacher
–librarians are full instructional partners with classroom teachers.
They can provide:
 A holistic cross-cultural perspective
 Specialized knowledge of learning resources and technology
 Specialized knowledge of resource-based learning
 Effective strategies for developing information literacy.

ROLES OF TEACHER-
LIBRARIANS
PROGRAM AND INSTRUCTION
 In the area of program and instruction, the teacher-librarian is responsible for:
 Implementing resource-based learning in a program for all students
 Analyzing student and curricular needs
 Effectively instructing/ evaluating student learning
 Developing an appreciation for the aesthetic qualities of literature
 Assisting in the development of an integrated plan for information literacy
 Knowing/ using current technology in information processing
 Effectively supervising students
 Providing materials and resource-based programs in local languages/ dialects
RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
 In order to facilitate effective program delivery, the responsibilities of the
teacher-librarian include:
 Developing and articulating objectives for implementation of the program
 Providing effective organization and supervision of facilities and resources
 Supervising the selection and acquisition of resources
 Supervising staff and parent/ student volunteers
 Networking with schools, other libraries and various electronic agencies
 Communicating with parents and other educators on the collection development.
EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP
 In order to realize program potential, the responsibilities of the
teacher-librarian include:
 Advocating resource-based learning in school library policies and procedures
within a collegial atmosphere
 Being knowledgeable of current learning and teaching strategies and learning
technology
 Developing the potential of school library staff and/ or student volunteers
 Seeking opportunities for personal growth in school librarianship
 Working at local and regional levels in programs and curriculum development
 Sharing with colleagues knowledge and expertise gained from experiences in
a school library
COLLABORATIVE PROCESS
 To maximize the success of the collaborative effort between the
classroom teacher and the teacher-librarian, planning is essential.
The following may serve as a checklist of procedures:
 Collaboratively define the learning outcomes for the unit or project
 Discuss the abilities and interests of the students
 Brainstorm ideas for activities, effective use of resources and building critical
and creative thinking skills.
 Decide the assessment procedures and who will be responsible for each
activity or section of the unit
 Evaluate the unit from the perspective of its effectiveness in reaching the
intended outcomes. Identify areas, which might be improved upon for the
next jointly planned unit.

 Answer incoming reference questions via telephone, postal mail, email, fax, etc
 Build collections to respond to changing community needs or demands
 Suggest appropriate books to users of different reading levels and for recreational reading
 Research topics which may interest their patrons
 Manage access to electronic information resources
 Digitize collections for online access
 Look for grants to fund for expanded collections, professional development
 Coordinate with groups in initiating and promoting library activities and library/reading
clubs
