Definition Discussion
• What is National Security?
• refers to policy enacted by governments to ensure the survival and safety of the
nation-state, including but not limited to the exercise of diplomatic, economic, and
military power in both peace and war?

• What is Homeland Security?

• a concerted national effort to prevent terrorist attacks within the United States,
reduce America’s vulnerability to terrorism, and minimize the damage and recover
from attacks that do occur?

• What is Emergency Management?

• an integrated approach to the management of emergency programs and activities
for all four emergency phases (mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery),
for all types of emergencies and disasters (natural, man-made, and attack), and for
all levels of government and the private sector?

• Have these evolved in past 6 years?

• How do/can they influence each other?
• So What? (Hint: think investments and policy
priorities)
