Business Process Modeling Notation

Business Process Modeling Notation
(BPMN)
 BPMN consists of a series of symbols or “standard objects” to

represent tasks and workflows. Of course, there’s nothing to

stop you from developing your own set of symbols. However,

using standardized ones makes collaboration with outside

analysts easier and saves you from having to dream up a

visual language of your own.

 BPMN symbols fall into the following categories:

◦ Flow objects:

Events are represented by circles, activities fit into

rectangular boxes with rounded corners, and gateways or

control points are represented with diamond shapes.

Gateway
Exclusive Gateway:
 When dividing the flow, it directs the flow exactly to one of the output
branches.
 In the given example, there are only two possible path of the business
process and these two possible paths will only execute one but not
both.
Event-based Gateway
 Event-based gateway is always followed by an intermediate
event or a message-receiving task.
Parallel Gateway
 A parallel gateway is used to represent two concurrent tasks
in a business flow.
Inclusive Gateway:
 Inclusive gateway is also a division point of the business
process. Unlike the exclusive gateway, inclusive gateway
may trigger more than 1 out-going paths.
Exclusive Event Based Gateway:
 An exclusive event-based gateway is used to branch a process when
alternative paths are determined by event.
 Depending on which event occurs first, the process will take the
corresponding path
Parallel Event Based Gateway:
 When used to split the flow, all output branches are activated
simultaneously.
 When converging parallel branches, it waits for all input branches to
complete before starting the output stream.

◦ Connecting objects:

Since tasks are interconnected, we join them up to show

their sequence. Solid lines indicate task transfers, and

dashed ones indicate messages.

◦ Artifacts: If you need to add extra information that isn’t a

sequence flow or message flow but that helps to explain a

process, you can use artifacts. Dotted lines point to the flow

object the extra information expands on. Squares outlined

with dots and dashes group elements in the diagram, and

text annotations are added with a square bracket.
