METAMORPHIC

ARCHITECTURE
METAMORPHIC ARCHITECTURE

• Metamorphic architectures are generated by the deformation

of modelling space. Morphing represents an additional
deformation and transformation techniques, which involve a
time based strategy.
• Metamorphic generation of form includes several techniques
such as key shape animation, deformations of the modelling
space around the model using a bounding box (lattice
deformation), an spline curve, or one of the coordinate
system axis or planes, and path animation, which deforms an
object as it moves along a selected path.

EXAMPLES OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF METAMORPHIC
1-Morphing:
ARCHITECTURE
Dissimilar forms are blended to produce
hybrid forms that combine formal
attributes of the "base" and target‖ objects.
As shown in the figure the frames of
transforming a box to sphere.

PATCH DEFORM:
A process of deforming an object, by making it moves on a surface of another object.
The deformation of the first object depends on the topological surface of the other one.
As shown in the figure a torus moves on surface of a plane.

it is a process of deforming an object by making it moves along path. As
shown in the figure an object moving along a spline.

LATTICE BOX:
The main form is surrounded by a virtual box, which is represented as points, by
moving these points the main form is modified.

The design of project started with a basic form like box, which was then transformed or
modified to create a new form generated by metamorphic methods
(Like path deform, bending).

Morphosis Architects

Thom Mayne

Thom Mayne (born January 19, 1944) is an

American architect. He is based in Los
Angeles. In 1972, Mayne helped found the
Southern California Institute of Architecture
(SCI-Arc), where he is a trustee. Since then he
has held teaching positions at SCI-Arc, the
California State Polytechnic University,
Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona)[1] and the
University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
[2] He is principal of Morphosis Architects,
an architectural firm in Culver City, California.
Mayne received the Pritzker Architecture Prize
in March 2005
HOW MORPHOSIS ARCHITECT FIRM ARISES?

The firm was informally founded in 1972 by Michael Brickler, Thom

Mayne, Livio Santini and James Stafford. Michael Rotondi joined the
practice in 1975 and remained a principal until 1991.[1] Writing in 1989,
Boston Globe architecture critic Robert Campbell called Morphosis "one of
the country's most interesting" architecture firms, and described its very
physical, materials-focused design style as "look[ing] as if it might hurt

 PHILOSOPHIES
LAYERS:
Morphosis adheres to the concept that many layers make up the whole.
Previous discoveries from former work layer with cultural peculiarities and
local pop-culture and the idea of dynamic reconfiguration of previous
archi- tectural sensibilities. The seemingly wild and inordinate angles and
forms of each building are derived from forms from the surrounding
setting, be it the seemingly random signs, lights and surrounding structures
in a cityscape, or the natural organic forms of the “many laminations” of
the earth itself. Both are always considered and implemented.
FLOW:
The obvious thing one is confronted with inDiamond Ranch
High School a Morphosis-designed building, is the feel of
mechanical structures and movement. The movement of
clockwork is suggested by in- terlocking planes and forms
suggestive of gears and pistons. These are not imposing or
oppressive, however, due to the integra- tion of these forms with
organic structures and forms that lead one through each build-
ing in a natural and intuitive way. The move- ment of humans
through space, and our in- teraction with our surrounding
environment is in constant consideration. Each side and 2000
turn of a Morphosis building is filled with dy- namic new forms
that encourage a playful, Pomona, USA active interaction with
the building

The performative steel skin wraps the

exterior façade in an angular weave,
shading interior classrooms and
creating a continuously dynamic and
transformative surface. Advanced
digital modeling tools used in
designing the pattern, geometry, and
details of the skin speak to the
profound impact of computing on the
arts and sciences.
The building program is organized to foster serendipitous social and academic
exchanges, extending education beyond traditional classroom settings. Primary
circulation is organized around a glazed atrium on the west side of the building
where a full-height glass facade, skylights, and interior envelope of fritted glass
reveal a nexus of activity on all floors. Ringed with informal study and
collaborative spaces, the atrium provides literal and visible connections across
disciplines. Encounters and impromptu charettes are facilitated by regular alcove
spaces in the corridors, where the floor-to-ceiling glazing lining classrooms and
offices becomes a transforming canvas for graphics, blackboard equations, and
casual notes.
Gates Hall’s integrated sustainability systems express Cornell’s commitment to
environmental stewardship, using multiple strategies to create healthier
environments, reduce energy consumption, and preserve natural resources. Designed
for ample daylight penetration, Gates Hall employs openness and transparency to
create work environments that are more healthful for students, both physically and
mentally. The high-performance glass façade, perforated metal shading screens, and
mechanical system using campus lake-source cooling contribute to Gates Hall
achieving 30% lower energy usage than a typical academic building. To decrease the
environmental impact of construction, local/regional, recycled and renewable
building materials are used throughout the building

The exterior moves away from the once-warm homeliness to
conventional masculine features indicative of a more rough and edgy
demeanour. The colour palette creates a harmony through play of mild
grey dominated by orange-brown – again bordering on the warm and
robust. The modulation on the exterior façade is a rationale of the
indoor functions. The building’s orientation is towards the south-west;
hence, the highly-sterile zones are designed towards the front to screen
them from the heat gain. Similarly, the first-floor slab is recessed to
limit the direct southern sun and make the interior more habitable.
Following the concept of morphosis i.e. the development characterized
by structural change, Creative Designer Architects add to their portfolio
a former dwelling converted into a men’s fertility clinic.

Creative Designer Architects (CDA) have resurrected a 40-year-old,

derelict South Delhi home into a flagship clinic that houses several
function-oriented spaces viz. patient areas on the ground floor, staff areas
and clinical support utilities on the first and the highly sterile OT
department on the top floor
The architect’s approach to this project is laudable. It is not uncommon for an old
building to be torn down and replaced; but surprisingly, here, the architects choose to
work with the existing load-bearing walls by effecting some major structural
challenges. Since the walls were without any RCC members in the design, new walls
were constructed for every load-bearing wall that was knocked off and new ones built
were augmented with careful attention to strengthening and retrofitting with
structural steel, injection grouting etc. at multiple locations – a process that has added
another 2-3 decades to the life of the building

Building down the compound wall that may have separated the corner plot home
from the busy road has opened up the interiors significantly. A small atrium with a
sky-light near the entrance lobby exemplifies the amount of daylight seeping in. The
closely-knit wooden battens in a confined colour palette of beige and browns breathes
warmth and care which almost reminisces of the home that it sits in. Inorganic
seating forms and strong curves that dominate the walls, floor and ceiling make for
the final organic touch that completes the picture
