The process by which

meanings are
exchanged b/w people
through the use of
common set of symbols
is called
COMMUNICATION.
What is communication?
 (from Latin "communis", meaning to share)
 is defined as a process by which we assign and convey
meaning in an attempt to create shared understanding.
This process requires a vast repertoire of skills in
intrapersonal and interpersonal processing, listening,
observing, speaking, questioning, analyzing, and
evaluating.
 Use of these processes is developmental and transfers
to all areas of life: home, school, community, work, and
beyond. It is through communication that
collaboration and cooperation occur.
 Communication is a two-way process by
which information is exchanged between or
among individuals through a common
system of symbols, signs, and behaviour
(Martinez 1)
Principles of Communication
 1.Communication is a process. – It is an
activity that begins from a starting point.
2.Communication is a system. – It involves
interrelated parts that affect one another (Wood)
 3.Communication is Dynamic. – It is not a
single event but is on-going so that
communicators are at once both senders and
receivers (Martin and Nakayama)
Principles of Communication

transactional. – communicators take turns in
sending and receiving message. simultaneous
exchange
 5. Communication can be Intentional or

Miscommunication is probably the biggest single cause of
business foul-ups. You think you were clear; you think you
provided the complete picture; you think the other person
understood. And yet the work product does not meet your
expectations. What went wrong and how can you prevent it
from happening again?
The Goals of Communications:

To change behavior

To get and give

Information
To get action

To persuade To ensure understanding

DANGERS OF
MISCOMMUNICATION
- An important cause of business foul-ups
- The other person/client did not understand what
you thought was clear and accurate
- The work product does not meet your expectations
- Where did it go wrong?
- How can you prevent it from happening again?
Have something to say and say it
as clearly as you can, that is the
only secret of style.
- Matthew Arnold
Speak properly, and in as few
words as you can but always
plainly. For the end of speech is not
ostentation, but to be understood.
- William Penn
