Advanced Analysis

An introduction to the Course

Professor Stephen Pratt
What does the course set out to do ?

Subtitle :

Some issues in the analysis of C20th music,

practices and techniques
The course examines some approaches to the
analysis of C20th music through a range of case
studies. Whilst the emphasis will be upon the
practical application of analytical techniques,
the course will also consider questions that arise
from such approaches.
What is the assessment?
The course is examined by an end-of-year
examination. At key points in the year, there will
be tutorials and formative assessment to
support on-going student learning and
understanding.
Something to think (and talk) about...

Last year’s analysis course – what was the

focus ? How did we look at the music being
discussed? Could we have looked at the music in
different ways? Why might we want to do this ?
A musical analysis...
...cannot attempt to be comprehensive. It can
look at the musical object from a number of
different perspectives. To demonstrate this...
