5S ACTIVITIES

for Work Place

What is 5’S Activity
Seiri means Sort it (clean up)

Seiton means Set it (Organise)

Seiso means Shine ( Cleaning)

Seiketsu means Standardise

Suitsuke means Sustain ( Training & discipline)


Why do we need to practice 5’S
 To create a pleasant work place
 To reduce equipment Breakdown time and to increase
operation rate.
 To avoid possible investment in new machinery &
equipment's.
 To eliminate waste in time for searching and handling.
 To reduce defects & identify causes for poor quality & initiate
corrective actions.
 To reduce maintenance cost of machines.
 To make effective use of space of space.
 To enhance safety.
 To promote better Team work.
 To create better visibility of activities performed & the results.
When do we start this?
We have to start it from the day one when we
start production.
 Poor state of Machines / Equipment / Tools leading to
quality deterioration.
 More time is spent in direct and indirect areas by way
of searching for Tools / Files / Documents.
 Poor house keeping leads to unsafe work place &
indirect losses.
 Poor material discipline leading to manufacturing
delays.
 Poor office upkeep leading to delays in transacting
with suppliers & customers.
How do we carry out 5’S Activities
Step - 1 : Seiri ----- Clean up
 Undertake major cleaning up activities.
 Keep in mind the spirit of waste elimination.
 Develop specific policy & guidelines on the disposal of unwanted
things & upkeep necessary.
 Devise storage method depending on the priority

 Are there unnecessary items at the work place.


 Are there unwanted cables, pipes just left as they
are
Are there any tools, materials just lying without any
need
Are all necessary items sorted out, classified,
labeled.
A 5S “ MIRROR” : FIXED -POINT
PHOTOGRAPHY

FIXED-POINT PHOTOGRAPHY IS A METHOD OF


REPEATEDLY PHOTOGRAPHING A PARTICULAR
AREA OF THE WORKPLACE FROM THE SAME
POSITION AND FACING THE SAME DIRECTION, IF
POSSIBLE WITH THE SAME CAMERA. WE
PHOTOGRAPH THINGS WE WOULDN’T WANT OTHER
PROPLE TO SEE ABOUT THE WORK AREA, THE
EQUIPMENT, AND THE WORK METHODS.
Step --- 2 : Seiton -- Organizing.
This activity involves simple steps as suggested below:
 Analyze the present condition

 Get rid of all unnecessary items

 Fix storage places / methods

 Devise proper layout / Classification

 Develop Rules & Procedure

 Standardize names, tags, labels etc.


Step -- 3 : Seiso -- Cleaning

Cleaning is more than skin deep.

 Are there spillage of oil, coolant, dirt, metal burns on


the floor, aisles & around machines.
 Are there any part of the machine / equipment dirty
with oil or metal burns.
 Are any supply lines or pipes oily / dirty or hard.
 Are the air / oil outlets clogged with dirt.
 Are the light bulbs, reflectors or shades dirty.
SEISO
Keep the workplace Clean and Tidy
Steps for SEISO
 Remove dirt from everything.
 Everyone begins to participate in cleaning from the 10th
day or so

 Identify & eliminate the source of dirt


 Mend defects revealed by cleaning

 Work out a cleaning standard & carry it out cooperatively


 The source of dirt must be eliminated

Step -- 4 : Seiketsu -- Standardising

Maintain the workplace in proper condition by setting


standards using visual controls.

 The ‘limit indicators’ with increased visibility like a


jeweler's box.

 Different Tags / Labels to indicate where / what / how


much would be stored.

 Control check list to help people maintain the


standards.
Some Check points :
 Are they wearing dirty / dangerous clothing.

 Does the workplace have adequate lighting / power.

 Is there heavy noise, vibration, heat etc.

 Is the roof leaky.

 Is the place for eating / smoking ear marked etc.

 Is the Gangway clearly marked etc.

 Setting goals & targets, competitions would motivate
people achieve greater results in this area.
Wherever difficulties are experienced it is worthwhile to
train the men in the area in order to sort out specific
problems.
While developing standards & setting goals it is
essential that operating people are involved.
 Is there daily inspection check list.
 Are work order reports executed properly & promptly.
 Are the men wearing proper protective clothing &
devices.
 Is the group meeting as per schedule.
