NORTH GWINNETT

LINEBACKER E.D.D.’S

BONE’EM UP DAWGS!!!
Characteristics of our Three LB’s
• Mike- able to call strength and check
fronts if needed. Must make good
decisions on fits. Can be the most
confusing.
• Buck- Must be strong so he can fight off
TE and double teams. Not a lot of glory,
but very important. Hardest to play.
• Will- Your best runner and hitter if you can.
Must be productive because scheme
covers him often. Easiest to play.
LEVEL DRILL
• Four man drill: 3 on offense, 1 on defense.
• LB starts in front of an OL. Bust and
Benches him on snap.
• Rips through a second level blocker that
has a blocking shield.
• Form fits third level who acts as a ball
carrier.
* Second level can be eliminated because of
numbers or ability level. Timing must be
worked on.
BIG PAD
• 2 Lines: 2 Men backs to pad 1 yd. away.
• Ready: Break down.
• Feet: Buzz feet in place.
• Go: Shimmy up to the tackle and drive into
the pad.
• Alternate shoulders
BAGS
• One in each hole
• Two in each hole
• Three in each hole
• Slide shuffle
• Up and Back
• Linebacker
** Rip out at end of each drill**
FLIP THE HIPS
• Line players on a yard line
• Face coach and back pedal on movement
• Coach points a direction and player rotates hips
to direction indicated and continues to run with
head turned towards the coach. Keep contact
with line.
• Next command straightens players back into a
back pedal.
• Player then is pointed to opposite direction and
tries to rotate hips and run as they did above.
• Lastly, player turns and runs out away from
coach.
ONE MAN SLED
• Bust and Bench
• Rip Drills
1. 1-2-3 Go!
2. Back’em Off
3. Cross
BUST AND BENCH
• Player gets in a good Linebacker stance in
front of sled or partner.
• On command, Linebacker “Busts and
Benches” pad up by locking out opponent
with thumbs up position.
• A rip out of the bench position will be
added once extension is reached.
• Begin practicing ripping out with right and
left arms.
1-2-3 GO!
• Two LB’s stand on each side of bag as
close as possible.
• On command, each will rip through with
inside arm and foot, then will reset.
• This continues for a count of three.
• On a ‘GO!’ call, LB’s rip out and run to
coach and break down.
BACK’EM OFF
• Back LB’s up to 5 yards depth.
• Have them dip and rip on bag from a
running start.
• Break down on coach behind bag.

*Make sure they lower themselves before

reaching bag.
CROSS
• Back LB’s up to 5 yards depth.
• Two LB’s will now cross and rip on opposite
sides of the bag. Designate a side to go first.
• Have them dip and rip on bag from a running
start.
• Break down on coach behind bag.
*Make sure they lower themselves before reaching
bag.
*Do not let them circle wide off of bag, should
skinny up after rip.
TRIANGLE DRILL

• Two down lineman and a RB make a

triangle. LB stands at normal depth and
reads the triangle by going through his
progression.
• LB steps with RB on first step, sees front
side lineman on second step, and scheme
by third.
TRIANGLE DRILL CON’T

• Base Reads: Base RT/LT, Sweep RT/LT,

Zone RT/LT, Straight Drop Back
• Advanced Reads: Counter RT/LT, Boot
• Reminders: Rip through all blocks, go over
the top of everything if Buck or Will. Mike
must fill inside out.
RUN FITS
• Defensive call & Formations- pre snap
adjustments.
– Examples
• Schemes- post snap fit.
