SUBJECT-
VERB
AGREEMENT
Today’s Mission
1. Observe the correct rules on subject - verb
Agreement;
2. Apply the rules of subject-verb agreement in writing
meaningful sentences/paragraphs
12
LET’S RECALL…
13
SUBJECT
- is the doer or what the sentence is all
about.
PREDICATE
- tells what the subject is doing (verb)
14
Basic rule
A singular subject (noun or pronoun)
takes a singular verb (verb base form +
s/es), whereas a plural subject takes a
plural verb (baseform).
15
Examples:
16
Rule 1
17
Examples:
A bouquet of red roses ( lend / lends ) color and fragrance
to the room.
18
Rule 2
Two singular subjects connected by or,
either/or, or neither/nor require a singular
verb.
19
Examples:
My aunt or my uncle ( is arriving / are arriving today.
20
Rule 3
The verb in an or, either/or, or neither/nor
sentence agrees with the pronoun or the
pronoun closest to it.
21
Examples:
Neither the plates nor the serving bowl ( go / goes ) on
that shelf.
22
Examples:
Neither she, my friends, nor I ( am going / are going ) to
the festival.
Neither she, I, nor my friends ( is going / are going ) to
the festival.
23
Rule 4
As a general rule, use a plural verb with two or
more subjects when they are connected by and.
24
Examples:
A car and a bike ( is / are ) my means of transportation.
25
Rule 4
The verb is singular if the two subjects
separated by and refer to the same person or
thing as a whole.
26
Examples:
Breaking and entering ( is / are ) against the law.
27
Rule 5a
Sometimes the subject is separated from the
verb by such words as along with, as well as,
besides, not, etc. These words and phrases are
not part of the subject. Ignore them and use a
singular verb when the subject is singular.
28
Examples:
The politician, along with the newsmen, ( is expected /
are expected ) shortly.
29
Rule 5b
Parentheses are not part of the subject.
Example :
Kylie (and his mutt) (was / were ) always welcome.
30
Rule 6
In sentences beginning with here or there, the
true subject follows the verb.
31
Examples:
There ( is / are ) four hurdles to jump.
32
Rule 7
Use a singular verb with distances, periods of
time, sum of money, etc., when considered as a
unit.
33
Examples:
Three miles ( is / are ) too far to walk.
34
Money in unit and in pieces
1. Twenty three thousand
pesos is the amount of
my Meralco bill.
2. Twenty three thousand
pesos are on the table.
35
Rule 8
With words that indicate portions – eg., a lot, a
majority, some, all – Rule 1 is reversed, we are guided
by the noun after of . If the noun after of is singular,
use a singular verb. If it is plural, use a plural verb.
36
Examples:
A lot of pie ( has / have ) disappeared.
37
“A lot of pie” but
when counted, it’s
just one, singular
Some of the pies – two when
counted, plural
Half of the people –
four when counted,
plural
Rule 9a
Indefinite pronouns refer to non-specific persons, place,
and things.
44
Rule 9b
Indefinite pronouns refer to non-specific persons, place,
and things.
Always many, few, several, both, others..
Plural
May be none, all, some, most, more, any, either
singular
or plural
45
Examples:
Everyone has / have done his or her homework.
46
Rule 10
A collective noun refers to a group of people or things
as a singular whole (e.g. population, team, committee,
staff). The form of verb depends on the style of English
you are using. US English tends to use a singular verb,
while UK English tends to use plural verb.
47
US English UK English
The team usually wins. The team usually win.
The herd migrates in The herd migrate in
summer. summer.
48
However, in both styles of English, this rule is
somewhat flexible depending on whether you want to
emphasize the actions of the collective as a whole or
the individual actions of its members.

Note: When the subject follows the verb, as in sentences beginning with there,
here, or where, be careful to locate the subject and make sure that the verb agrees
with it.
Introductory words, such as here, there, and where are never subjects of sentences.
In these sentences, the subject usually follows the verb.
