MOTIVATION
is the word derived from the word ’motive’
which means needs, desires, wants or
drives within the individuals. It is the
process of stimulating people to actions to
accomplish the goals.
In the work goal context the psychological factors
stimulating the people’s behaviour can be:

desire for money

success
recognition
job-satisfaction
team work, etc
Maslow’s Need Hierarchy Model
Human behaviour is goal-directed.
Motivation cause goal-directed behaviour. It
is through motivation that needs can be
handled and tackled purposely. This can be
understood by understanding the hierarchy
of needs by manager. The needs of
individual serves as a driving force in
human behaviour. Therefore, a manager
must understand the “hierarchy of needs”.
Maslow has proposed “The Need Hierarchy
Model”.
The needs have been classified
into the following in order:
Physiological needs- These are the basic needs of an individual which includes food, clothing,
shelter, air, water, etc. These needs relate to the survival and maintenance of human life.
Safety needs- These needs are also important for human beings. Everybody wants job security,
protection against danger, safety of property, etc.
Social needs- These needs emerge from society. Man is a social animal. These needs become
important. For example- love, affection, belongingness, friendship, conversation, etc.
Esteem needs- These needs relate to desire for self-respect, recognition and respect from
others.
Self-actualization needs- These are the needs of the highest order and these needs are found in
those person whose previous four needs are satisfied. This will include need for social service,
meditation.

MARK ZUCKERBERG
Success Story
While many intelligent people attend Harvard University, Mark Zuckerberg became known
quickly as the go-to computer programmer on campus. By his sophomore year, he had already
built two programs: CourseMatch and FaceMash. Both programs became wildly popular, but the
university shut down the latter program after it was deemed to be inappropriate.
Based on his acclaim on campus, Zuckerberg partnered with friends to create a social
networking site that allowed Harvard students to connect with each other. The site officially
went live in June 2004 under the name "The Facebook," and Zuckerberg ran it out of his dorm
room.
After his sophomore year, Zuckerberg dropped out of college to pursue what was then called
Facebook full-time. The website reached 1 million users by the end of 2004.

JEFF BEZOS
Personality Traits & Leadership
Qualities
Bezos is known for his double-personality that turns him
from a kind person into a rough executive inducing fear and
respect in his employees. A hyper-intelligent, ultra-driven
individual, he expects everyone around him to behave
likewise. Amazon staff are said to be living in fear of his
abrasive flare-ups, including “Why are you wasting my life?”
and “Are you lazy or just incompetent?”
 after graduating in 1988 (a process that he was
initially rejected four times for),
 getting turned down by over 30 companies (including,
infamously, KFC), before seeing all 10 of his
postgraduate applications to Harvard Business School
 unceremoniously refused.
 Utilising these experiences, he returned to China in
1999 and created the online marketplace Alibaba

BILL GATES
Lessons to take:
If he can do it, so can you.
Gates did not build the first OS that IBM used, he bought the licensing
rights from SCP and then continued to build upon that to create the
company that Microsoft is today.
You don’t have to create something new, you can take a product and
improve upon it so that it is excellent.
Do something that you are passionate about, Bill Gates loves
computers. So find your passion and start a venture around that.
Believe in yourself.

HENRY SY
HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
Henry Sy came from an impoverished family in Jinjiang, a town near Xiamen, China. The entire family
left China in 1936 to help the family patriarch manage a thriving convenience store in Manila.
Unfortunately for the family, their store was burned down during World War II. However, business-
minded Henry saw an opportunity selling used military combat boots and other postwar goods from
supportive American soldiers!
His success led to the opening of his first shoe store, the SM in Avenida, Manila. Henry had problems
finding shoe manufacturers who could design shoes according to what he had in mind, but he
persisted. He spoke to customers and built his own network of suppliers and manufacturers.
That never-say-die attitude got Henry Sy to where he is now: one of the richest men in the world and
a world-class commercial center developer who provides opportunities to both entrepreneurs and
the working class!

Business?

Need to fill in what’s missing or lacking
IDEA
ACTION
Starting a small business is a big step for anyone to
take, as it may require leaving the comfort and security
of a regular job for a more uncertain financial future.
For some, working at a typical nine-to-five job is a
satisfying way to earn a living. But for others, an innate
entrepreneurial spirit may lead them down a path of
self-employment or create the desire to launch a
business enterprise. There are a variety reasons that
can result in someone becoming an entrepreneur.
Income Potential
When you start your own business, you have the opportunity to earn an
unlimited income based on your own efforts and the success or failure of the
enterprise. This differs from working for a company where your income may be
limited by a salary structure or the evaluation of your performance by your
superiors.

Pursuing a Passion
Starting your own business allows you to make a living while pursuing
something for which you have a strong passion. You may have a special talent,
such as writing, playing music or repairing automobiles that you've enjoyed as a
hobby. By turning it into a business, you may find more enjoyment and
fulfilment in your work life that can lead to a happier life in general.
A Good Idea
You may have an idea for a product or service that meets an unfulfilled need in the
marketplace. By turning your idea into a business, you can be the first to meet that need
which can result in a profitable venture. You could profit even more by teaching your idea to
others or by creating a business model, which you can turn into a franchise.

New Lifestyle
Starting a business can be a way for those who are tired of the "9-to-5" grind to leave the
corporate world and enter into a more flexible lifestyle. Depending on the type of business you
choose, you may be able to work a more flexible schedule, which can allow you to spend more
time with family and friends. A business can also appeal to those who enjoy making their own
decisions without direction from others.

Self-Expression
Owning a business allows you to be more creative and express yourself. You are not restricted
by having to follow a set work methodology, and you're free to change your work processes if
you wish. You can also create additional products or services to meet customer demands.

STEVE JOBS
“I reached the pinnacle of success in the business world. In others’ eyes,
my life is an epitome of success.
However, aside from work, I have little joy. In the end, wealth is only a
fact of life that I am accustomed to.
At this moment, lying on the sick bed and recalling my whole life, I realize
that all the recognition and wealth that I took so much pride in, have
paled and become meaningless in the face of impending death.
In the darkness, I look at the green lights from the life supporting
machines and hear the humming mechanical sounds, I can feel the breath
of god of death drawing closer …
Now I know, when we have accumulated sufficient wealth to last our
lifetime, we should pursue other matters that are unrelated to wealth
Should be something that is more important:
Perhaps relationships, perhaps art, perhaps a dream from younger days
Non-stop pursuing of wealth will only turn a person into a twisted being, just like me.
God gave us the senses to let us feel the love in everyone’s heart, not the illusions brought about by
wealth.
The wealth I have won in my life I cannot bring with me. What I can bring is only the memories
precipitated by love.
That’s the true riches which will follow you, accompany you, giving you strength and light to go on.
Love can travel a thousand miles. Life has no limit. Go where you want to go. Reach the height you want to
reach. It is all in your heart and in your hands.
What is the most expensive bed in the world?
Sick bed …
You can employ someone to drive the car for you, make money for you but you cannot have someone to
bear the sickness for you.
Material things lost can be found. But there is one thing that can never be found when it is lost — Life.
When a person goes into the operating room, he will realize that there is one book that he has yet to finish
reading — Book of Healthy Life.
Whichever stage in life we are at right now, with time, we will face the day when the curtain comes down.
Treasure Love for your family, love for your spouse, love for your friends.
Treat yourself well. Cherish others.”
