Complete Dentures – Trial Denture

Appointment 
Introduction

Definition: The process of placing a

trial denture in the patient’s mouth

for evaluation of the fit, aesthetics


Objectives of try-in
1. To evaluate and change, if necessary, any errors before
the dentures are finished.
- the vertical dimension of occlusion
- centric relation
- mold
- shade and the esthetic arrangement of anterior teeth
etc
2. allowing the dentist to check all previous recordings
3. permits the patient to assess the appearance of the
dentures.

the dentist.
Extra oral evaluation
An examination of the completed set up on the
articulator should be carried out before trying in the
mouth, and any discrepancies noted.

Phonetic test
Causes of speech defect in complete
denture:
Poor fit
Improper arrangement of teeth
High vertical dimension
Reduced tongue space

Phonetic Test:
Sibilant sounds
Fricative sounds
Sibilant sounds (‘S’, ‘Z’‘T’ ‘CH’ ‘SH’,
‘sixty-six’, ‘Mississippi’) - upper and
lower incisors should approach end
to end relationship
Fricative sounds (F, V, ‘Fifty-Five’ ,
ask patient to count from 50 to 60) -
upper incisal edges should just touch
the posterior one third of the lower
lip
Patient approval of the appearance

After carrying out any corrections


that are necessary, obtain the
patient’s comments. Do not
proceed to finish unless the patient
is satisfied, especially with the
appearance (record this in the
notes).
If any changes have been made to
the vertical dimension, centric
position, tooth position, or
excursive contacts, then these
aspects of the setup should be
rechecked in a 2nd try-in
appointment
Completion of the Laboratory Prescription
Complete the laboratory prescription, requesting
processing, finishing and polishing of the denture.
You should also request the lab remount the dentures
and adjust the occlusion to compensate for processing
changes.
Ask the lab to fabricate a remount record and casts,
which will be used at the delivery appointment.
Add any special instructions for touchup of the wax-up
or other unique requirements & send to the laboratory
with the dentures.
