INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION
WHAT: Globalization, Media, and Information and
Communications Technology are interconnected

WHY: It’s started from the history of globalization.

Robertsons (2003) cited three contemporary waves
of globalization. First wave was the European
Imperialism, then 2nd wave was the Industrial
Revolution; and the 3rd wave was the American
Globalism.

Then, came the insight of Robertsons stating that the 3rd

wave was a distinct one because there emerged the
idea of “globality”. What is Globality? It is defined
as consciousness of the world as a single place; and
for Albrow (1996) it is different from globalization
from the main idea that globality is “the quality of
being global”.

GLOBAL MEDIA
GLOBAL MEDIA

“the mass communication on a global level,

allowing people across the world to share
and access the same information.’’
ROLE OF MEDIA
The mass media are today seen as playing a key
role in enhancing globalization, and facilitating
cultural exchange and multiple flows of information
and images between countries through international
news broadcasts, television programming, new
technologies, film, and music.
ROLE OF MEDIA
• With Globalization and Communication Technology, Media is one of the three
intertwining concepts in creating a global Village. Globalization entails the
spread of diverse cultures promoted in the various forms of media as a channel
of communication (Claudio and Abinales (2018)).

• According to Marshall Mcluhan, “the medium is the message” which draw

attention to how media as a form of technology reshaping societies.

• Satellite technology has enabled the simultaneous distribution of news across

nation-state borders, and transnational[1] - media networks such as CNN have
“become emblematic of a world in which place and time mean less and less”
(Hjarvard, 2001: 18).
ROLE OF MEDIA
• The media have an important impact on cultural globalization in two mutually
interdependent ways: Firstly, the media provide an extensive transnational transmission of
cultural products and, secondly, they contribute to the formation of communicative
networks and social structures.
• Global Media cultures create a continuous cultural exchange, in which crucial aspects
such as identity, nationality, religion, behavioral norms and way of life are continuously
questioned and challenged. These cultural encounters often involve the meeting of
cultures with a different socio-economic base, typically a transnational and commercial
cultural industry on one side and a national, publicly regulated cultural industry on the
other side (STIG HJAVARD).
• Global media promote a restructuring of cultural and social communities. The internet, for
example, not only facilitates communication across the globe, but also supports the
formation of new social communities in which members can interact with each other.
ROLE OF MEDIA
• Global Media platform is the result of Teads’ commitment to delivering better
advertising outcomes for brands, better monetization solution for publishers, and better
experiences for consumers.
• Media can be Classifies into four types:
 Print Media (Newspapers, Magazines)
 Broadcast Media (TV, Radio)
 Outdoor or Out of Home (OOH) Media
 Internet
• Cross-border communication technologies such as the internet, mobile phones, and
satellites have contributed to the deterritorialization of space over the last decades, and
transnational media networks and news services such as CNN, BBC World News,
FoxNews, and Al-Jazeera have entered and transformed the media landscape. In a
dialectic fashion, these media are believed both to constitute and to be constituted by
globalization, transforming understandings of time and space (Chalaby, 2003;
Thompson, 1995).
MEDIA EVENTS
Media events may center on a news
announcement, an anniversary, a news
conference, or planned events like speeches
or demonstrations. Instead of paying for
advertising time, a media or pseudo-event
seeks to use public relations to gain media
and public attention

CONTENT OF ICT
Information Communication
Technology is primarily an electronic
system for the transmission, receipt, and
processing and retrieval of information.
The ICT revolution is therefore the core
and driving force of globalization and
the dynamic change in all aspects of
human life is the main by-product of the
ICT revolution’s current globalization
era.
CONTENT OF ICT
● ICT is the driving force behind this economy. Its informational features have
increased the ability of businesses or nations to efficiently provide and process
information based on expertise.

● ICT has directly influenced the economy as a result of its speed, low cost,
versatility, networks, and applications. Thus, geographical distance has become
less important and financial markets have become more transparent.

● In addition, ICT offers a network that plays an important role in creating greater
interconnectedness. Hence, ICT contributes to the spread of the e-economy by
encouraging decentralization, providing more open interactions between nations,
and creating opportunities for new variation, production and progress.
CONTENT OF ICT
Lack of job security – experts in a wide range of fields believe that ICT has made
job security a major problem, since technology continues to evolve almost every
day

Overriding Cultures - While ICT may have made the world a global village, it
has also contributed to one culture consuming another weaker one.

Destruction of local industries- in certain cases, companies/ corporations in some

areas take advantage of cheap labor, which destroys local industries because
these local companies does not compete with wages paid by larger multinational
firms.

BENEFITS OF THE
“GLOBAL VILLAGE”
 McLuhan and the Global
Village has led to the new
emergence of new technologies

› These new technologies speed up

development, and it also raises the level
of education in many countries. Due to
McLuhan theory of the global village,
people can learn about different
cultures and foreign language
 The global village has led to
improvement in health care
› Due to technology new methods and
equipment for treating patients can be
accessed easily.
 Due to globalization, it has become easy to get
information
› Developing countries can easily share
information with the countries which are
already ahead

* Cultural exchange can now be done

quickly
› Every country can now learn the culture of the other country in an
easy way, and this will pave the way for tolerance and openness.

* Globalization has helped developing

countries
› To obtain high rates in economic growth and
reduce the number of people who are living
in poverty.
McLuhan’s compares the global village to the central nervous system
explaining that society is interconnected by the influence of electronic
technology (1967) and this concept is unquestionably still relevant, even though
the media is much more immediate and constant than fifty years ago.

For example, we receive news in real time, (rather than waiting for the 6pm
news) and we can even communicate with nations on the other side of the world
from our phones and our laptops, we have hundreds of apps and websites
dedicated for sharing and bringing information to one another.

The Global Village allows for the world and
all communities to connect across a great
medium to become that “tribe”.
