HOLY SPIRIT

AS THE
COMFORTER
But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going

away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you;

but if I go, I will send him to you.
John 16:7
INTRODUCTION

John
14:16
16
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another
advocate to help you and be with you forever—

Another comforter that we may

abide with you forever.
I. HE IS OUR TEACHER, John
14:26
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my
26

name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have
said to you.

a. He guides into truth – John 16:13

But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the
13

truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he
will tell you what is yet to come.
 Half truth is sometimes worst than ignorance

 Bible spiritual book, Acts 8:30-31

30
Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the
prophet. “Do you understand what you are reading?” Philip asked.
31
“How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?” So he invited
Philip to come up and sit with him.

 Ignorance of the disciples before they receive the infilling of

Spirit
b. He acts as God’s mouthpiece for revealing His words and desires – John
16:12-13
Inspire men to write the bible, 2 Peter 1:20-21
Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came
20

about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. 21 For prophecy

never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human,
spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

 Speaks Personally, Acts 8:26-27

Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Go south to the road—the

26

desert road—that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” 27 So he started

out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian eunuch, an important official
in charge of all the treasury of the Kandake (which means “queen of
the Ethiopians”). This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship,
II. He is our Reminder, John
14:26
a. Reminding the word of God, John 14:26
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my
26

name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I

have said to you.
 Peter - Matthew 26:75
Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: “Before the
75

rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” And he went outside

and wept bitterly.
 Disciple – Mathew 16:21
From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must
21

go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the

chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and
on the third day be raised to life.
 Early Church Leader – Acts 11:15-18
15
“As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us
at the beginning. 16 Then I remembered what the Lord had said: ‘John
baptized with[a] water, but you will be baptized with[b] the Holy Spirit.’ 17 So
if God gave them the same gift he gave us who believed in the Lord Jesus
Christ, who was I to think that I could stand in God’s way?”
18
When they heard this, they had no further objections and praised God,
saying, “So then, even to Gentiles God has granted repentance that leads to
life.”

 In times of chastening – Hebrew 12:6

“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline,

and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,

because the Lord disciplines the one he loves,
and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”
b. Reminding of a special promises God has given in the past
 Paul – Acts 27:24-25
and said, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul. You must stand trial before
24

Caesar; and God has graciously given you the lives of all who sail
with you.’ 25 So keep up your courage, men, for I have faith in God
that it will happen just as he told me.

 Israel - 1 King 8:56

“Praise be to the LORD, who has given rest to his people Israel

56

just as he promised. Not one word has failed of all the good
promises he gave through his servant Moses.
III. He is the reprover, and convictor
of the world, John 16:9-11
about sin, because people do not believe in me; 10 about

righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me

no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world now
stands condemned.
