RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE SUPPLY CHAIN
MANAGER
In this era of
 accelerated change,

overwhelming complexity in consumer tastes and

preferences,

keen competition in the business environment,

Coupled with the pressure to:

 Increase Revenue  Have Happy Customers
 achieve sales targets/quota  reduce or eliminate lead
 launch new product or time variability
service  provide quick response

 Increase Profit  Support the Community

 increase utilization rate  Sponsor charitable events
 reduce production cost

 Build Amazing Product (s)

 Increase feature set
 Apply new design
Organizations perform better as supply chain
partners than as individual firms (Li et al., 2006;
Lu, 2011; Min, 2015).
 Where there is:

 Improved coordination and

 integration of activities

 to provide their markets with higher service

levels at reduced costs.
 This this is achieved through synergy-
Where two or more organizations interact or
cooperate to produce a combined effect greater
than the sum of their separate effects.

Where
2+2 =5
 In simple terms, a supply chain consists of all parties
involved directly or indirectly in fulfilling a
customer’s request.

 These parties include the manufacturer suppliers,

transporters, warehouse providers, retailers, and
customers (Chopra and Meindl, 2016).

 Supply chains are dynamic and involve the constant
flow of:

 information,
 product, and
 funds between different stages

 These are referred to as Supply Chain flows

 Supply chain flows provide the linkages between the various

stages of the supply chain
 Simply, SCM is the management of the chain of
suppliers.

 It is the integrated planning, co-ordination and control of

all business processes and activities in the SC to deliver
superior consumer value at less cost to the SC as a
whole whilst satisfying requirements of other
stakeholders in the SC (Van der Vorst (2004).
 Effective management of SC flows
(information, materials and funds) as they
move in a process among players of the chain.

 Involves coordinating and integrating the

flows both within and among companies.
 The SC manager must ensure:

 smooth materials/goods flows in and out of the

organization

 clean, well-designed work processes

 sufficient production capacity for the demand

 The SC manager must ensure :

 sufficient goods and service to satisfy the

customers

 sufficient logistical resources for distribution

 appropriate quality systems in place.
