INTRODUCTION
•Proliferation of non-linear loads has contributed to decrease power quality in
power distribution systems due to harmonic distortion in the voltage at the
PCC.
•Some power filters have been developed as solutions to reduce these
disturbances .
•The disturbances not produced by the own receptor have not been taken into
account as aims of compensation, although the behavior of the power filters
in those situations has been studied.

POWER QUALITY IN POWER DISTRIBUTION

SYSTEMS
• Most of the more important international standards define power quality as the
physical characteristics of the electrical supply provided under normal
operation.

• Power quality problems are common in most of commercial, industrial and utility
networks.

• For the electrical supply industry, the quality of power delivered will be one of the
distinguishing factor for ensuring customer loyalty in this very competitive and
deregulated market.

SOLUTIONS TO POWER QUALITY

PROBLEMS
• There are two approaches to the mitigation of power quality problems. The first
approach is called load conditioning.

• Series active power filters must operate in conjunction with shunt passive filters
in order to compensate load current harmonics.

• Active power filters can perform one or more of the functions required to
compensate power systems and improving power quality.

NON LINEAR LOAD

• Nonlinear loads are loads in which the current waveform does not take the
shape of the applied voltage waveform .
• Total harmonic distortion (THD)is an important index used to describe power
quality in power system. It is define as the contribution of every individual
harmonic component on the signal.
• THD is defining for current

HARMONIC SOURCE AND EFFECTS

• Generally every device that uses power electronic components drives produce
harmonics.

• Among the most common nonlinear loads in power systems are all types of
rectifying devices .

• The effects of harmonics in power systems and electrical loads are described as
disturbance to Electric and Electronic Devices, and higher losses.

TOPOLOGIES
• The four analyzed topologies are:

• . Parallel Passive Filters (PPF)

• Parallel Active Filter (PAF)
• Hybrid Filters: Active Filter in parallel with Passive Filters (AFPPF)
• Hybrid Filter: Active Filter in series to Passive

Comparison of compensation
capabilities
The compensation capabilities of these four topologies have been
analyzed taking into account these different conditions
• Ideal mains: sinusoidal and balanced
• Series resonance
• Parallel resonance
• Tuned harmonics on utility voltage
• Increase of tuned harmonics on load current
• Compensation of non-dominant harmonics

CONCLUSION

• This paper has presented a comprehensive solution to the Power Quality Problems
in Variable Frequency Drives using Hybrid Filters Appropriate filters are designed in

accordance with design procedure.

•The work may be treated as a useful tool in mitigating power system harmonics in
adjustable speed drives.
• The hybrid series active filter is effective and economic for solving harmonics
problem in large capacity non-linear load..
