History
•Apartheid (racial segregation) laws are established as early as
1910 that dictate the separation of races.
•South Africa no longer an English colony in 1950, Afrikaner
government elected which continues system of apartheid.
•In 1960, a political protest in a segregated township is
suppressed by the police. 69 die, and 180 are wounded in the
“Sharpeville massacre”
•Shortly afterwards, the African National Congress, a black
political party, is banned, and Nelson Mandela imprisoned for 27
years.
•After years of international pressure, these laws are finally
overturned in 1990, leading to free elections in 1994: Nelson
Mandela elected president

South Africans most play Soccer, Rugby, Cricket
with other significant support are Swimming,
Athletics, Golf, Boxing, Tennis, and Net
Ball.
