Questionnaire design is one of the important area of research. It is most
commonly used. The accuracy and relevancy of data collected depends
upon the questionnaire. There are certain function which a questionnaire
performs and these are:-
Ô ëives to the respondent clear idea and understanding of the questions.
Questions should not be vague.
Ô Motivate the respondents to give answers.
Ô Stimulate the responses.
Ô How respondents should answer, clear cut instructions.
Ô Information must be treated confidential.
There are 2 types of research instruments (Fig. 3.00):-

Questions should be properly worded, simple, clear and not vague.
Unbiased. It can be Closed ended or Open ended.
Sequence of questions is important. Lead questions should create
interest. Difficult questions in the end. Personal questions in the end.
They should be in a logical order.

Questions can be of 2 types i.e. close ended and open ended. Let us
discuss each one of them.

Questionnaire should be brief, to the point and as small as possible. It
should meet the desired objectives. Suppose we have to conduct a study
on "Consumer perception of Yamaha RXë Motor Cycles vis a vis
Competitors. We will first design a pilot questionnaire (Annex-I). It should be
administered to about 10% of the sample. After analysing this data, the final
questionnaire should be prepared (Annex-II) and administered to entire
sample for final analysis.
