mOne of the basic end-use property of a C.F.

B is to protect
the contents against compression force during the
packaging, storage, and distribution. As the boxes are
usually stacked and subjected to highly compressive loads,
the compression strength of the box is very important.
mThe edge crush test is very important as it is the major
contributor to the box stacking strength.
mThe edge crush resistance gives information of the max.
power at which a corrugated board sample, with defined
length and height was stressed.
Definition of edge crush strength.

áignificance of the test.
? ©dge crush resistance of a corrugated fibre board is
used for edge wise rigidity of the board and the
probable crushing resistance of the finished container.
This is helpful for the designer to specifying a suitable
corrugated board container to resist the compression
force expected to be encountered in shipment and
storage. It is thus important for quality control in
corrugated board factories.
’rinciple
? A rectangular test piece of dimensions as per the
standard of C.F.B is placed between the platens of the
crush tester, with the flutes perpendicular to the
platens, compressive force is applied until failure
occurs and the maximum force sustained by the test
piece is measured.
? The edge crush resistance DzRdz in Newton/metre is
given by the formula R = F x 103/l.
Where DzFdz is the max. load in Newton.
Where Dzldz is the length dimension of the test pieces in
Dzm.mdz
Vrush Tester
? The equipment consists of the platens one
rigidly supported and the other driven.
? The platens are parallel and large enough to a
take test piece of the specified size.
? The machine has a means of driving the
moveable platen a uniform speed. The speed of
the platen can be controlled at 12.5 m.m/min.
? It provides a means for measuring and
indicating the maximum load sustained by the
test specimen with an accuracy of 0.5%.
? Overall force range with inter-changeable load
cells up to 5 K.N.
? Operations either manually or through the
software.
? Output: Digital and Graphical display.

C.F.B with dimensions of the test specimen as:
? 25.0 ± 0.5 m.m x 100.0 ± 0.5 m.m, or
? 30.0 ± 1.0 m.m x 50.0 ± 1.0 m.m
? The above IS test method is based on ISO:3037.
? All the test specimens are accurately cut and taken from
the areas away from the score lines, joints and closures.
The specimen is placed centrally on the platen with guide
blocks on each side. Compressive force is applied to the
specimen. At certain force, w.r.t the standard, the guide
blocks are removed without altering the platen moment
rate until the specimen fails. The graphical and digital
display of the crushing force along with the deflection can
be seen on the monitor attached to the equipment. Ten
readings are to be taken, the edge crush resistance test is
reported in N/m, Kg.f/c.m. or Lbs/inch.
