The History of The Barnard Zine
Collection
Established by Jenna Freedman- Head of Research
Services and an active member in Radical Reference
and a zine author herself- see The Lower East Side
Librarian.
The Zine Canon
Zines are historically independent publications
produced at little to no cost to the creator- with the
intention of free or inexpensive distribution and sale.
The originally sprang out of the idea of the “fanzine”
and were large in the underground punk movements
of the late 70’s and early 80’s.
Later they would be instrumental in not only music,
but in underground political movements in the United
States and abroad.
