The History of The Barnard Zine
Collection
Established by Jenna Freedman- Head of Research
Services and an active member in Radical Reference
and a zine author herself- see The Lower East Side
Librarian.
The Zine Canon
Zines are historically independent publications
produced at little to no cost to the creator- with the
intention of free or inexpensive distribution and sale.
The originally sprang out of the idea of the “fanzine”
and were large in the underground punk movements
of the late 70’s and early 80’s.
Later they would be instrumental in not only music,
but in underground political movements in the United
States and abroad.
Zines in Education
Art focused hands on educational tools

Useful in all disciplines from world history, to gender


studies, race studies, and literature.
Zine Cataloguing
Barnard generates MARC records for zine titles
Searchable in the “CLEO” system at Barnard and
Columbia
Available for Interlibary Loan
Borrow-Direct Service amongst the Ivy’s.
