What Does it Mean to be

healthy?

Many people have many ideas about what health actually is


or what it means to be healthy so what does health mean?
•The world health organisation defines health as having a holistic approach which
reflects health in relationship with a variety of factors such as the individuals
physical, social, psychological and emotional condition, environmental and cultural
factors as well as the creativity and productivity of a person.

D-evelopment
•PDHPE has the goal of enabling children to become
happy citizens of the world who are socially,
mentally, physically and spiritually healthy. (Board of
studies, 2007).

H- ealth
•It develops cooperation and Team Work. It allows
students to interact together to a common goal and
that is to win and excel physically. It brings out the
competitive sides of students working both body and
mind but also promotes sportsmanship.

P-
hysical •Childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past
30 years. The prevalence of obesity among children
aged 6 to 11 years increased from 6.5% in 1980 to

19.6% in 2008.(national centre for disease and health
promotion).
ducation
•It builds self esteem
•It promotes academic learning
•It promotes a physically active lifestyle.
What is PDHPE?
PDHPE takes into consideration:
• Physical, social, cognitive and emotional growth and
development.
• Develops positive social relationships.
• Informs children how to make appropriate health choices.
• Promotes an active lifestyle.
• Develops gross and fine motor movement skills.
• Allows children to live and learn in a safe and secure
environment.
• Promotes team work and cooperation.
• Enhances leadership skills.
The benefits of sport!
Sport has a range of benefits especially for primary
school students!
• Develops decision-making skills
• Develops motor development skills
• Promotes self-efficacy
• Teaches children to be a responsible and healthy citizen and member of the community.
• Develops interpersonal relationships.
• Develops communication skills.
• Encourages growth and the development of good values.
As famous sporting hero nelson Mandela stated
“Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to unite in a way that little else
does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sport can create hope where
once there was only despair. It is more powerful than governments in breaking down
racial barriers. It laughs in the face of all types of discrimination."
PDHPE however is not just
about sport!!
PDHPE is not simply about physical activity, its main aim is to
provide children with the tools and life skills in order to
make the right decisions in regards to their wellbeing.
PDHPE covers a range of topics as can be see listed below!
• Nutrition
• Personal safety
• Growth and development
• Peers and relationships
• Drug education
• Feelings and emotions.
