POSITION OF

PATIENT

Explanation of patient’s pasitioning,,

Positioning of patient’s is essential for maintaining


proper alignment.Many patients,because of
injury,disease,helplessness or terapeutic device need
assistance with repositioning.
SUPINE POSITION
Start with the bed flat and the patient lying on the back.
The patient's head should be about two to three inches
from the head of the bed.

Place pillows under the legs to reach from above the back
of the knee to the ankle so that the ankles and heels do not
rub on the sheets.

PRONE POSITION

Start with the bed flat and the patient lying on the
abdomen with head turned to either side, spine
straight and legs extended.

SIM’S POSITION
This position is a variation of lateral position with the patient on the left
side, left leg extended and right leg flexed. This position is often used for
rectal examination and treatments.
1. Place a pillow under the patient's head as for lateral position.
2. Start with the bed flat and the patient moved and turned onto the
left side.
3. Extend the patient's left arm and position it behind the patient's
back.
4. Flex the right arm and bring it forward. Support arm with a
pillow.
Sim’s Position
D. FOWLER'S POSITION
This position, or a variation of it, is used for feeding patient's in bed, for certain
treatments and procedures, for the patient's comfort while visiting or watching
television, and for those who have trouble breathing.
1. Start with the patient on the back, in the middle of the bed and in good alignment.
The patient's hips should be at the place where the bend bends when the bed head is
rolled up. Place the head of the bed at 30° for semi-Fowler's, 45° to 60° for
Fowler's, and 90° for high Fowler's.
2. Place one or two pillows behind the patient's head to extend four to five inches
below the patient's shoulders.

F. Semi-Fowler’s position (supported)

Pillow to support head, neck, and upper back to prevent hyperextension


of neck.
1. Pillow under forearms to eliminate pull on shoulder and assist venous
blood flow from hands and lower arms.
2. Small pillow under thighs to flex knees to prevent hyperextension of
knees.
E. Trendelenberg Position
A person in the Trendelenberg position is lying supine with
their head slightly lower than their feet.
G. Dorsal recumbent position (supported)

Pillow of suitable thickness under head and shoulders to prevent


hyperextension of neck in if thick-chest person.
1.Roll or small pillow under lumbar curvature to preventposterior flexion
of lumbar curvature.
2.Roll or sandbag placed laterally to trochanter of femur to prevent
external rotation of legs.
LITOTOMI POSITION

•The patient is now changed from the lateral decubitus


position to the dorsal lithotomy position. The vulva, vagina,
and lower abdomen are prepped and draped.
