WHAT IS SINGLE PARENTING

Single parenting is the practice of raising children and building a family without a spouse or partner. Basically it is one parent having to serve a dual parent role, that of mother and father to a child or children in the extended or permanent absence of the other parent

MYTHS
Since culturally, traditional nuclear families are the norm and predominant, single parenting is an aberration and single parents are often left lonely and isolated. Children from single-parent families have emotional and behavior problems and do poorly in school.

Single-parent families mean 'broken homes'.

Being brought up in single-parent families is detrimental to children's self-esteem.

Families need to be self-sufficient, while single parent families aren't.

EFFECTS OF SINGLE PARENTING

Often the children are disregarded in a break up, or when a death of a parent parenting on a child can be both negative and positive depending on how the remaining single parent handles the situation and chooses to support their child.

As adults - teachers, coaches, neighbors, family, and friends, we can change our attitude, be more sensitive and compassionate, and recognize that SINGLE PARENTS RAISE GOOD KIDS TOO! The following strategies are offered to the single parent who is determined to raise a good kid despite the myths of doom and gloom.
