Interpretation of Syllabus

Preparing to Teach
The syllabus is translated into curriculum

specifications and hence to scheme of work The scheme of work is a plan of what needs to be taught for the semester/year and the order to teach it. The learning outcomes of the syllabus form the basis for the scheme of work. Drawing a Scheme chart.doc

breaks down the broad topics given in

the syllabus into narrower, teachable units.

a plan made to last perhaps a

semester, a month or just a number of weeks.

forecasts what work is expected to be

covered within a specific period of time.

A scheme of work should address four basic issues

What do we teach?

To outline knowledge, concepts, skills and attitudes to be developed, links between subjects and cross- curricular elements. How do we teach? To cover how the curriculum and learning processes are to be organised, units of work or

or topics, learning activities and processes, forms of grouping to provide differentiation, resources needed, time allocation and opportunities for assessment When do we teach? To address the issues of curriculum continuity and progression throughout appropriate key stages

How do we know that children are learning?

Methods and plans for monitoring progress and attainment.

What is a scheme of work?

It is a written plan made by a teacher, which shows a breakdown of topics he/she intends to cover in a given term based on the syllabus what needs to be taught and the order to teach it.

It may include time, dates and most of all topics to

be covered in a year, month, week or day. It is the most useful evaluation tool you can have

Each learning unit consists of:

The learning outcomes Themes/worlds/topic Skills specifications Language content Educational emphases Suggested activities

Lesson Plans and Schemes of Work Whats the differences?

Scheme of work sets out what you are planning for the whole semester/year. While the lesson plan is finer grained(detailed) and looks at what you are going to do within each lesson.

Factors to consider in planning scheme

Time allocation Interpret syllabus items in greater detail. Select and

prioritize items. Grade, sequence and combine items selected -known to unknown, simple pattern to complex structures

-listening & speaking before reading

& writing - select topics of interest to learners - create coherent link between units

Build in reinforcement & enrichment strategies-

recycle items (A spiral syllabus- cover similar area/topic each time at a higher level of complexity) Balance of four skills-needs of the learners, integration of skills

Integration of skills, language content, topic Grading and sequencing and number of skills in

specifications Balance of specifications, skills and language content

TASK
In groups of 3 or 4, plan a scheme of work/unit for a

week by referring to the CURRICULUM SPECIFICATIONS and the textbooks.

Select a representative from your group and present

the scheme of work to your class.
