Hydrogen Sulfide Gas (H2S)

Generalities:
Found worldwide Produced during biological & industrial process Often associated with gas ,oil & water

H2S

Measurement unit:
PPM : Parts per million Percentage in volume. 1 ppm is equal to 1m/m in 1 Km or 1 inch in 1.6 miles 1gallon in 1000 000 gallons 1$ in 1000 000 $

H2S Physical & Chemical properties:

Extremely toxic. Colorless. Heavier than air specific gravity: 1.189 Offensive odor (rotten eggs). Odor Threshold value: 0.028 mg/m3 (0.002 ppm). Vapor pressure 20ATM at 260C Produces Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) when burning. Soluble. Causes corrosion.

H2S

Fire & Explosion Hazards

Explosive between 4.3% to 46% per volume Auto ignition temperatures: Extinguishing media: Special procedures: CO2 260c Dry powder

Wear SCBA

Effect of H2S
Deadly gas ,causes paralysis of the respiratory center

1ppm (0.0001%) 10ppm (0.001%)

Odor of rotten eggs. Threshold Limit Value - 8 hours continuous work. Smell killed within 3-15mins Eyes, Throat, Skin irritation, Headache, Upset stomach, Pulse Rate Increases. Kill sense of smell, Eyes & Throat Burning. Unconsciousness, Breathing Stop. Immediate Unconsciousness Imminent death.

H2S

Factors affecting Individuals

Duration

The length of time the person is exposed to H2S Concentration of H2S the person is exposed to Physical & mental conditions of the person How often/long the person is exposed to H2S

Intensity

Receptivity

Frequency

7 30 June 2003

H2S Detection

Use detector not your nose Make sure detectors are working set at 10 & 20ppm Locate them where you can see the visual warning. Adjust sound level to surrounding noise

8 30 June 2003

H2S Escape

Know the escape routes & alarms. Wear Safety equipment. Check for wind direction. Escape crosswind to Muster Point. Remember H2S is heavier than air
9 30 June 2003

H2S Protect

Wear SCBA. Always have a backup. Bring victim out of contaminated area. Give First Aid.

10 30 June 2003

H2S Measure

Wear SCBA. Use the Sniffer. Dont use personal monitor. Return to area only after measurement completed & when all the alarm have stopped. Measurement is performed by Site QHSE Officer.

H2S Effect on Equipment

General Corrosion
Corrosion that appears all over the exposed area of metal.

Pitting Corrosion
When Fe is scratched / removed metal become anodic to surrounding film covered metal.

Stress Corrosion Cracking

Stress corrosion cracking occurs in places where stress is imposed to the material & around welds where inadequate heat control has created internal stress, the total stress may exceed the yield strength of the material.

Hydrogen Embrittlement
Causes spontaneous brittle fracture of steel when exposed to water & H2S weakening them at 15% of their yield strength.
