EMBRYONIC PERIOD (3rd to 8th week)

Organs develop from ectoderm Organs develop from mesoderm

Period of organogenesis Trilaminar germ disc is transformed into a embryo with major organs and human external features

Trilaminar germ disc

ORGANS DEVELOP FROM ECTODERM

At the beginning of 3rd week ectoderm is oval in shape Ectoderm, over notochord and prechordal mesoderm, thickens to form neural palate ( process is NEURULATION )

Neurulation

Neurulation

Neurulation
After induction this process expands towards the primitive streak Initially neural plate is slipper shaped and elongated Later edges of neural plate elevated upwards and fold towards the opposite end (neural tube formation) Fusion begins at future neck & spread in cranio-caudal direction

Neurulation

NEURAL PLATE thickened ectoderm over

notochord & prechordal mesoderm

NEURAL FOLD

elevated edge of the neural plate space between neural folds specialized cells in the tip of the neural fold precursor of brain &spinal cord

NEURAL GROOVE NEURAL CREST NEURAL TUBE

Till the fusion of neural tube the cephalic and caudal end of tube communicate with the amniotic cavity Closure of the cranial neurapore occurs at day 25 Closure of the caudal neurapore occurs at day 27 neurulation process is completed when cranial and caudal neuropores closed

Closure of neuropores

Neural crest derivatives

During neural tube formation, cells from the lateral border of neuroectoderm migrate away from neural fold These cells under go transition of epithelial to mesenchymal cells Mesoderm cells derived from epiblast &
extra embrionic tissue Mesenchyme loosly arranged connective tissue regurdless of the origin

Structures formed by ectoderm

Central nervous system Peripheral nervous system Sensory epithelium of nose, ear & eye Epidermis with hair & nails Subcutaneous, mammary & pitutary glands Enamel of of the teeth

Day 25

Day 28

Derivatives of mesoderm
Para axial mesoderm Intermediate mesoderm Lateral plate mesoderm

Day 17

Derivatives of mesoderm
At the end of the 2nd week mesoderm is a thin sheet of plate along the side of notochord By 17th day medial part of mesodermal cells proliferate & form thickened mass (Para axial mesoderm)

Day 19

Day 20

Lateral part of mesoderm is called lateral plate Newly formed 2 layers are

Visceral mesoderm layer cavity Parietal mesoderm layer cavity

cover york sac covers amniotic

Two layers form a new cavity called intra embryonic body cavity Intermediate mesoderm connects the para axial mesoderm & lateral plate mesoderm

Day 21

Para axial mesoderm

Begins to form by 17th day At the beginning of the 3rd week this is organized into segments (Somitomeres) Somitomeres first begin in the cephalic region and gradually formed in caudal direction Mesodermal cells of Somitomeres are arranged in concentric whorl around the center of it

Head region neural plate segmented according to adjacent somitomeres (Neuromeres) From future occipital region to caudal end somitomeres are arranged as somites Somites

form the future axial skeleton 1st pair appears in cervical region approximately on 20th day New somites appear in cranio- caudal direction Approximately 3 somite pairs develop in a day

By the end of 5th week 42- 44 somite pairs are formed

Occipital 4 pairs Cervical 8 pairs Thoracic 12 pairs Lumbar 5 pairs Sacral 5 pairs Coccygeal 8 to 10 pairs

All occipital & last 5 somites disappear

7 coccygeal

Somite differentiation

Somite differentiation
Ventral & medial wall
Form vertebral column Beginning of 4th week cells of ventral & medial walls of somite change their shape & migrate to surround the notochord (Sclerotome) Surround future spinal cord & notochord

Sclerotome formation

Dorso

lateral wall

Migrate & form precursors of limbs & body wall musculature

Dorso

medial wall

Migrate ventrally to form myotome

Remaining dorsal epithelium forms dermatome

Myotome formation

Dermatome formation

Molecular regulation of somite differentiation

Intermediate mesoderm
Differentiate to urogenital structures Cervical & upper thoracic regions form future nephrotomes Caudal region form nephrogenic cord

Lateral plate mesoderm

Splits and form parietal & visceral layers Line intra embryonic cavity Parietal mesoderm & ectoderm form ventral and lateral body walls Visceral mesoderm & endoderm form the wall of the gut Intra embryonic cavity form peritoneal, pleural & pericardial cavities
