Company overview
TATA Consultancy Services is an Indian software services & consulting company. It is one of indias oldest & largest providers of information technology. TCS, a part of TATA group, provides information technology & management consultation services to organisations in many countries.

Company generates around 19% of its revenues from manufacturing industry,& 6% of its revenues from its engineering & industrial services business. At the end of fiscal year 2006,TCS has over 66000 employees. TCS has more than 150 offices in more than 40 countries.

Company has annual growth rate of 32% over past four years. Revenues was distributed globally with America,Europe,India & rest of the world for 59%,22%,13%,6% 0f 2006 revenue respectively.

HISTORY
Tata consultancy services was established in year 1968. It began as the Tata Computer Centre, a division of the Tata Group,whose main business was to provide computer services to other group companies. An electrical engineer from the Tata electric companies, Fakir Chand Kohli, was the first General Manager.

Soon after, company was named Tata Consultancy Services. Early work for T.C.S. consisted of developing cross compilers for mainframe systems. Company expanded its development centers worldwide In the new millennium T.C.S. focusses on a 3 pronged strategy-

(c) Offices were loaded with the files (d) No information was availlable on the world wide web (e) This led to the origin of the Ministry of the Company Affairs 21 Project

Creation of company in 4hrs Accessibility of the forms from the internet Business transactions could be completed in hours. Proper maintenance of the files and documents.

Responsibilities in the project


Developing a system for e-filling of forms & online payments. Setting up of 53 MCA offices throughout the country. Training existing MCA personnel & hiring new ones Motivating employees.

Technological factors can lower barriers to entry, reduce minimum efficient production levels, and influence outsourcing decisions. Some technological factors include: R&D activity automation technology incentives rate of technological change

TCS had to find computer scientists to execute the work. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur was one of the only schools with a computer science department,affiliated with a US university. In 1974, hiring of the all 40 students from IIT. TCS grabed the opportunity. They purchased two IBM mainframes, secured a 2MB data pipeline and set up a Y2K factory in an industrial suburb of Chennai. They developed a detailed methodology whereby customers could figuratively drop a package of code at the door and have TCS put it on the assembly line. They code went through four steps: code analysis; remediation; testing; certification and

Much of the early work for TCS consisted of developing cross-compilers for mainframe systems. Tcs was asked to give a new solution for the trading purpose in NSE During the first year the system successfully supported more than 100,000 trades per day TCS built a Local Area Network (LAN) The company also set up their first offshore development centre (ODC) In 2003, the national government instituted a National e-Governance Plan (NeGP) by the help of TCS.

For disaster recovery TCS set up a synchronous near-center (20 30 kilometers away), and an asynchronous center in Chennai (over 1,000 kilometers away). The final solution was one of the largest core banking solution in world. It was deployed across approximately 5,000 branches consisting of 74 million accounts Average daily transaction volume exceeded 20 million transactions. After successfully deploying its solution at SBI, TCS began to target SBIs seven associate banks across the country, which together included more than 4,500 branch

According to a report by professor LEWIS M. BRANSCOMB at KENNEDY SCHOOL OF GOVERNMENT OF HARVARD UNIVERSITYcompany should take the project if it is feasible and provide value to the firm.
