Common Knowledge

 You don’t have to cite sources for “common

knowledge”. (Information that can be found in
more than one source – or information you
already knew before you started.)

 EXAMPLE: The World Trade Center was

attacked on 9/11/01.
Would you cite this?
LeBron James skipped college to
join the NBA. He was one of the
youngest players ever drafted. He
was Rookie of the Year in 2003-
2004.
 (thisinformation is available in many
sources)
NO!
Information is common
knowledge.
It is not an opinion.
It is available in more
than one source.
Would you cite this?
LeBron James has faced
incredible pressure as such a
young player because “no one
has ever had to overcome this
kind of hype as a high school
player.” Right now, he is shooting
70%.
YES!

The statistic needs to be cited as

Two parts of citations for research papers

1.End of the paper citations – Reference

page …That’s for TODAY!

2.In paper citations – called parenthetical

citations (putting the author name and the
date at the end of a quote)…that’s for
LATER when you start your drafts!
How to go about creating
Reference Page citations…
Collect the information you’ll need:
2. who,
3. what,
4. when ,
5. where

And did we say …

Do this as you go along!
There are handout and color-coded strips available
to help you in the library media center, too.
Then paste them into…
 Noodle Tools NoodleBib Express (the free part)
at http://www.noodletools.com/ OR
 Citation Machine at www.citationmachine.net

Both have “fill-in the blank” sections that will

help you generate your citations.

Many online sites like the KY Virtual Library will also have
ways to help you create citations.
Tips for finding the info for
online citations
 Look at the beginning of the article, on the
“about” page for the website, or at the
bottom of the page.
 If you can’t tell who the author is, begin
with title of the article or website.
 If the date of the source cannot be
determined, use (n.d.).
More tips for citing online sources
 Look for the title at the top of the web page or
on the title bar of the web page.
 The website title is different than the title of the
web page or article. Not every website has a
title.
 GOAL: Give sufficient info. for someone else to
retrieve the material
 Note the word from before URL

Tips… on sources for

citation as you go
along
 Ask for help from
teachers and
