The overall removal efficiency of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) in the system was (68%). The high BOD in the final effluent was correlated with the increase of algae in the polishing lagoon due to the long retention time. Effluent BOD also is mainly due to algae (60-90%). This algal BOD is very different to raw sewage BOD. The EU union specifies a filtered BOD of >25 mg/l as effluent quality requirement of the pond systems. By considering the filtered sample instead of unfiltered sample for algal BOD correction. The overall removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand (COD) in the system was (74%). Also, effluent COD mainly due to algae. The EU union specifies a COD of > 125 mg/l as effluent quality requirement of the pond systems. By considering the filtered sample instead of unfiltered sample for algal COD correction of >75 mg/l.
