Chemical Reactions
Burning gasoline in your car produces water, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and other substances Baking a cake at home produces carbon dioxide - the same gas as gasoline!! Digesting your food also produces ??????

Science!
Science is a framework for gaining and organizing knowledge. Science is a plan of action a procedure for processing and understanding certain types of information. Scientists are always challenging our current beliefs about science, asking questions, and experimenting to gain new knowledge.

Therefore the scientific method is needed.

How Do Scientists Think?

Solving problems Observation - stated information gathered about a known problem Hypothesis - propose a possible solution to the problem based on the observations Ex. Allergic reaction
What are some observations you might make?

What hypothesis might you derive from the observation?

The Scientific Method

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. State the problem - write it down Make observations and collect data Formulate a hypothesis Perform experiments - test the hypothesis Conclusion - was your hypothesis correct? Why or why not? Is the problem solved? - No - Repeat steps 1-5.
*Quiz

Hypothesis vs. Theory

Hypothesis - defined as an educated guess about a problem Theory - a set of tested hypotheses that agree with the observations giving an overall explanation of some part of nature.
Model Can a theory change over time? *Quiz

Natural Law
Natural Law - defined as a theory about the natural world that has been proven many times to be true in many different systems.
Ex. Law of Conservation of Mass Mass can neither be created or destroyed - only transformed Therefore it can be stated that mass is always conserved

*Quiz

Learning Chemistry
Learn the vocabulary (memorization) Develop critical thinking skills
What is known or given about the problem? What is the unknown? What information can I gather to lead me to the answer? (ie. observations/data)

Patience
You wont get everything on the first try!
