A natural disaster is the effect of a natural hazard (e.g. flood, tornado, hurricane, volcanic eruption, earthquake, or landslide) It affects the environment, and leads to financial, environmental and/or human losses. A Natural hazard results in a natural disaster only when there is loss of human life and or property.

An Avalanche

Earthquakes: An Earthquake is a sudden shake of the Earth's crust. The vibrations may vary in magnitude. It is usually the secondary events that they trigger, such as building collapse, fires, tsunamis and volcanoes, that are actually the human disaster.

Volcanic Eruptions

Volcanic Eruption

Floods: Floods are caused by excess water in a river causing waterflow in adjoining areas. This is caused generally by heavy rains or cyclones etc. in coastal areas

Blizzards: A snow storm generally caused by disturbance in the weather. Cyclonic Storms: These are formed over oceans and can result in flooding in the nearby areas. Droughts: The lack of rainfall in an area over an extended period of time leads to droughts which is generally lack of potable water. Tornadoes: Thunderstorms formed over land masses are referred to as tornadoes. These are characterized by dense masses of rotating air.

Hurricane Katrina August 28

Epidemic: An epidemic is an outbreak of a contractible disease that spreads at a rapid rate through a human population. A pandemic is an epidemic whose spread is global. There have been many epidemics throughout history, such as Black Death. Famines: The reduced availability of food to the general population causes famines which leads to loss of lives due to starvation.

Gamma Ray Bursts: Blasts of energy in the form of slow travelling gamma rays can damage human body Solar Flares: A sudden burst of energy from the sun in the form of Light and heat are known as solar flares.

Meteoroids. : A heavenly body with a large mass which is set to collide with the earth or the moon Supernova or Hypernova: After a star runs out its lifetime it either explodes or it collapses into itself

It is almost impossible to prevent a natural hazard from occurring. Although it can be prevented from becoming a natural disaster by saving lives and human property. The natural environs should be kept in mind while populating an area. The environmental effects of our actions should be kept in mind.

What we do today will come back to affect us in the future so it is up to the present generation to make sure that the future holds good for us.
