What is a drug?
 Drugs are substances that some
people take because of their
pleasant effects, but which are
usually illegal.
 A chemical substance, such as a
narcotic or hallucinogen, that
affects the central nervous system,
causing changes in behaviors and
often addiction.
What is a drug?
 The desire for drug use is too
compulsive.
 The tendency of increasing the
amount of drugs
 When stop taking drugs, have all
sorts of withdrawal symptoms
 Have bad effects not only to a
person but to whole society.
How to addict?
 Tobe sure, no one ever starts out using
drugs intending to become a drug
addict. All drug users are just trying it,
once or a few times. Every drug user
starts out as an occasional user, and
that initial use is a voluntary and
controllable decision. But as time
passes and drug use continues, a
person goes from being a voluntary to a
compulsive drug user.
What are 3 major drugs?
 Marijuana

 Heroin

 Cocaine
What is marijuana?
 The dried leaves of the hemp
plant; smoked or chewed for
intoxicated effect
 The plant that produces marijuana,
as is well known, is the hemp plant
called cannabis sativa. The active
ingredient in marijuana is
tetrahydro-cannabinol
Marijuana
 The addiction and hallucination
caused by marijuana is minor, but
marijuana is dangerous just from
the fact that it brings about
addiction and hallucination no
matter how strong or weak it is.
What is heroin?

A white, bitter, crystalline

compound that is derived from
morphine and is a highly addictive
narcotic. Also called
diacetylmorphine.
Heroin

 Afteran injection of heroin, the

user reports feeling a surge of
intoxication ("rush") accompanied
by a warm flushing of the skin, a
dry mouth, and heavy extremities.
What is cocaine?
 The most potent stimulant of natural
origin, which is extracted from the
leaves of the coca scrub. Indigenous to
the Andean highlands of South America.
 Cocaine is usually distributed as a white
crystalline powder or as an off-white
chunky material. Cocaine base is
converted into the powder form, which
is usually cocaine hydrochloride, by
diluting it with other substances.
Cocaine

 Most people who snort cocaine

hydrochloride powder report a potent
feeling of exhilaration combined with
energy.
 Some feel nausea, while others feel
intense exhilaration.
