Agriculture Early History Growth and distribution in Agriculture Technology and Growth Future Trends Ranking Agricultural Banks in Pakistan Agricultural Problems Recommendations conclusion

Agriculture is the production, processing, marketing, and use of foods, fibers and byproducts from plant crops and animals.

Farming is Pakistan's largest economic activity. In FY 1993, agriculture, contributed 25 percent of GDP and employed 48 percent of the labor force. Agricultural products, especially cotton yarn, cotton cloth, raw cotton, and rice, are important exports. Most crops are grown in the Indus River plain in Punjab and Sindh. Considerable development and expansion of output has occurred since the early 1960s.

The policy of growth maximization was widely criticized during the Sixties for its adverse effects on income distribution, and social, political and economic stability. However, several recent studies show that rapid growth of agricultural sector has been no less than a blessing for Pakistan.

Agricultural growth may not be weakening. There is considerable evidence that private tube well installations led to a 50 percent increase in the cropping intensity. The shorter duration of the High-Yielding Varieties (HYVs) of wheat and rice and the availability of chemical fertilizers has produced similar results.

We must have a great collection of powerful tools of modern plant science at our disposal for the improvement of traditional crops through genetic management and for finding alternative means of controlling pests. These genetically engineered crops could be less dependent on chemicals that have been associated with environmental negatives.

Pakistan is one of the world's largest producers and suppliers of the following according to the 2005 Food and Agriculture Organization of The United Nations and FAOSTAT given here with ranking: Chickpea (2nd) Apricot (4th) Cotton (4th) Sugarcane (4th) Milk (5th) Onion (5th) Date Palm (6th) Mango (7th) Tangerines, mandarin oranges, clementine (8th) Rice (8th) Wheat (9th) Oranges (10th) Pakistan ranks fifth in the Muslim world and twentieth worldwide in farm output. Our farmers should know about the modern research in the field and should adopt modern scientific methods of agriculture. Farmers should be educated through print and electronic media about agriculture. There should be planned programs for water logging and salanity on national level to reduce this danger. Pesticides should be sprayed at the proper time. There should be research work on drops to control these diseases. Agricultural banks can be useful in this regard; farmers should be given loans on easy installments and less interest. Landlords should take interest in the business. Renters
