CSR is how companies manage the business process to produce an overall positive impact on society. It is basically a commitment by business to behave ethically and contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of the workforce and there families as well as that of the local community and also of the society at large.

CSR is concept in which the organizations consider the interests of society by taking responsibility for the impact of their activities on customers, suppliers, employees, shareholders, communities and other stakeholders, future generation and on environment.

The evolution of CSR is as old as trade or business but the term social corporate responsibility was first coined by Howard Bowen (an economist) in his publication in 1953. The first company to implement CSR was Shell in 1998.

In India, CSR has evolved to encompass customers, stakeholders and sustainable development and corporate citizenship. The spectrum of CSR includes a number of areas ashuman rights, safety at workplace, consumer protection, caring for environment, sustainable management of natural resources.

From the perspective of employees , CSR activities includeproviding health facilities safety measures preserving employees rights and discouraging discrimination at work place . All this helps in fostering a healthy environment within as well as outside the company.

TATA-after 1945, TATA implemented social welfare provisions for its employees that have since become the legislative norm.

TVS- TVS electronics was involved in CSR during the tsunami to provide relief measures to the victims. They have also participated with the Govt to improve sanitation in a village called Tiruvidenthai, which has helped to improve the condition of people of that village!

Mahindra and Mahindra ltd. has helped to bring back forest near its plants. renovated shivaji garden at cost of 6 lacks, traffic island garden at cost of rs 1.5 lacks. Active during natural calamities ,ex.-Gujrat earthquake and tsunami.

In a developing country like India, csr focuses onFocus on nation building Socio-economic development Rural development Education Health care Community support and many more.

Increasing affluence-Customer from elite level can afford to buy and pay more for premium brand but the poor customer might not be willing to pay so much for brand, instead they would prefer to spend their money on business which can take their business to much better level. Changing social expectation: Its natural that customer expect more from the company whose product they buy but with recent controversy and scandal of company has reduced the trust and confidence in the regulatory body and organization which manage the corporate.

Globalization and free flow of Information: With growing trend of media and easy access to information through mobile, TV even the minor mistake of the company is brought in public in no time, this sometime fuels the activist group and likeminded people to spread message which can lead to situation like boycott of the product.

Attraction and retention of staff Attracts green and ethical investment Attracts ethically conscious customers Can lead to reduction in costs through recycling Differentiates from competitors Increased profits in long term.

The sad part is that CSR still has not taken off in India according to a recent survey by Mumbai based online organization Karmayog. The second edition of the research revealed that nearly half of the top companies do nothing in way of CSR.
