Computer Networking

&
Telecommunications
By: Vince Vacca
Session 3
Safety
► Thefirst few days we
learned about classroom/lab
safety.
 Such as how to mount a
ladder, use fire extinguishers,
properly carry tools, etc.
► We also learned some
important power safety
rules/guidelines.
Networking Terms
► Todaywe learned some basic
networking terms. Such as…
 Server/Client Server
 Mainframe
 LAN- Local Area Network
 MAN- Metropolitan Area Network
 WAN- Wide Area Network
 CAN- Campus Area Network
History of Computers
► We learned all
about the history
of yesterday’s
computers.
► We also learned
some terms for
this section.
 Mainframe
 Mini
 Micro
History of Computers Cont’d
► Mainframes were/are used as a central
computer with “dummy” computers all
working off of it. These computers were
built to have many users using it
simultaneously.
► Mainframes are pretty secure because they
can be hidden and secured in a building.
► Also, information cannot be imputed into the
mainframe through the terminals AKA
“dummy computers”
Number Systems
► We learned that number
systems are important and
used in this line of work.

► Binary–the number system

that uses 1’s and 0’s. 1
being ON and 2 being OFF.

► Hexadecimal—the number
system that uses 0-9 and A-
F.
Number Systems
► Hexis used quite a lot for color pallets
and network connectors. See
screenshots below
Basic Networking
► BasicNetworking is what we learned
today.
► There is a ton of different types of
networks such as:
 Star
 Bus
 P2P
 Ring
 Mesh
Electrical Disturbances
► Electrical disturbances
can harm your computer
files, as well as your
hardware.
► We learned about
devices that can protect
us from them. And of
course the electrical
disturbances
themselves.
Electrical Disturbances
► Some electrical disturbances are..
 Sag/Brownout
 Blackout
 Spike
 Surge
 Line Noise
 Radio Frequency Interference [RFI]
Electrical Disturbances
► Some devices to safeguard against
these disturbances are…
 UPS—Battery Backup/Surge Protector
Primarily Protects against a blackout
[possibly also brownout/sag].
 Surge Protector—Device that stops a
surge from damaging equipment.
 Line Conditioner—Keeps/removes extra
noise in lines, caused by other electrical
devices.

Electricity
► We learned about electricity today.
► There are many ways to measure
electricity such as;
 Volts—The rate of flow
 Amps—The volume of flow.
 Watts—Volts x Amps= Watts (V*A=W)
 Ohms—The Resistance
► Ohm’s Law
Electricity Symbols
►Volts: V
►Amps: A
►Watts: W
►Ohms: Ω
►DC Current: ……
►AC Current: ~
►Diode:
Multimeter
► We learned how to use
multi meters today.
► They’re really pretty
simple, you just have to
know your symbols [see
previous page]
► Always set your meter to
a setting slightly above
the amount of current you
are checking.
[Example: 120V= set
meter to 200V]
Checking a Receptacle
► We learned how to check a Receptacle
for correct voltage, and how to identify
which holes are positive neutral and
ground.
Positive

Neutral

Ground
Power Supply
► Today we learned about Power Supplies and
how important they are in your computer.
► Power supplies are often overlooked when
upgrading a computer.
► Power supplies mainly convert AC 120V
current to the computers needed DC special
voltages current.
► Many power supplies on lower end
computers come with hardly any wattage
[power] left for future hardware upgrades.
Power Supplies
► Thereare 2 main types of power
supplies.
 AT—Older
 ATX—Newer
► Althoughthere are a few differences
such as…
 AT having 3.3V
 P1 Connector on ATX; P8 & P9 on AT
 AT has 120v on and off power switch.
Power Supply Wire Colors
► What
do all those different color wires
mean? Well they mean the following:
 Yellow– 12V
 Red—5V
 Black—Ground
 Green—Power Supply On
 Orange 3.3V
 Etc.
