AGENDA

What is a Femtocell ? How it can be deployed ? Benefits Is there any drawbacks ? Interference problems and mitigation Current status What about the future scope

BASE STATION IN CELLULAR NETWORK

Each cell base station functions as an access point for the mobile service Each mobile device connects to the base station of the cell which covers the current location of the device All the mobile devices within the range of a given base station communicate with each other through that base station only
MSC mobile switching centre BSC base station controller

FEMTOCELLS

Miniature cellular base station Handle 2 5 handsets Coverage radius on the order of 10 m Connect to provider via existing broadband link Plug and play Operate in licensed spectrum unlike Wi-Fi Enables encryption for calls and data Applicable to all wireless standards ( UMTS , GSM , CDMA 2000 , WIMAX )

SO HOW IS IT DEPLOYED ?

fig : Femto cell network architecture

FEMTO CELL COMPATIBLE RADIO TECHNOLOGIES

GSM ( global service for mobile communications )

most common cellsites are termed Pico cells since are not auto configuring

UMTS ( universal mobile telecommunication system )

evolution of GSM requires less cellsites most common technology for femto cell implementation

HSPA ( high speed packet access )

improved version of UMTS new handsets are required data rate up to 21 Mbits/sec

CDMA ( code division multiple access )

less common than GSM

LTE ( long term evolution )

joint undertaking by GSM and CDMA vendors called 4G standard orthogonal frequency division multiplexing

RNC

o Iub over IP architecture scalability problem RNC cannot handle 1000 s of HNBs Femto cells Controller

Core network

o Iu over IP architecture requires RNC per femto cell

Core network

o SIP/IMS architecture requires changes in existing core network

BENEFITS

For the customer 5 bar coverage and high battery life zero touch installation moveability better voice quality high data capacity elimination of dead spots in macrocells femto zone tariffs are possible

For the operator customer satisfaction improvement in coverage and capacity

INTERFERENCE

MITIGATION

FCs interfering with base stations on same frequency base stations interfering with FCs on same frequency femto cells interfering with each other cell phone signals received by both FCs and MCs

Mitigation techniques
adaptive pilot power control dynamic receiver gain measurement mobile phone uplink power capping extended dynamic range for femtocell receiver

PRESENT STATUS

1.7 billion femtocell access points deployed as on October 2010 3 US operators deployed femto cell services femto forum has grown to include 58 mobile operators femtocell specific 3GPP,3GPP2 & WiMax standards are completed initial cost slashed to 50 ( around Rs 3600/-)

POTENTIAL CONSUMER CONCERNS

A base station at my home ?

femtocell transmits less than Wi-Fi handsets transmits less power near femtocell UMTS femtocell maximum transmit power is 10 17 dBm

paying for an internet connection monthly subscriptions changing locations registering numbers

CONCLUSION
femtocell is promising and has a bright future issues are to be worked on FCs may be able to operate using EDGE standards no immediate need for FCs can be of immense help in rural areas should me made much cheaper femtocells speed up evolution of Universal Mobile Access ( UMA )
