Words are divided into eight


classes or categories
called parts of speech.
PARTS OF SPEECH
1. Nouns
2. Pronouns
3. Adjectives
4. Verbs
5. Adverbs
6. Prepositions
7. Conjunctions
8. Interjections
1. NOUNS
A noun is a word that refers to a
person, place, thing, animal, events
or quality. It is also not wrong to
say that a noun is the name given
to all that is seen, felt or heard.
e.g. 1. Suresh is a good boy.
2. Mumbai is a big city.
2. PRONOUNS
A pronoun is a word used in
place of a noun.
e.g. 1. He was a great man.
2. Rose is a beautiful
flower but it has thorns.
3. ADJECTIVES
An adjective is a word that
describes a noun or pronoun
or adds to its meaning. It
qualifies a noun or a pronoun.
e.g. 1. India is great country.
2. Johan is very handsome.
4. VERBS
A verb is a word used to say something
about some person , place or thing. It
denotes action, feeling or existence.
They are ‘doing’ or ‘saying’ words .They
highlight something done or said about
subject.
e.g. 1. Johan reads a book.
2. The baby plays.
5. ADVERBS
An adverb is a word which modifies the
meaning of a verb , an adjective or an
another adverb. In other words adverb
is used to add something to the
meaning of the above mentioned
parts of speech.
e.g. 1. He works carefully.
2. He speaks politely.
6. PREPOSITIONS
A preposition is a word that is used to
show the relationship between to
objects or persons . It is placed before
a noun or a pronoun that it is to
govern.
e.g. 1.He is fond of music.
2. The pen lying on the table.
7. CONJUCTIONS
Conjunctions are joining words.
They help us in joining word ,
phrases , clauses and even
sentences.
e.g. 1. Jim and Seema are good
friend.
2. Either Seema or Rita is at
fault.
8. INTERJECTION
The word which is used to express
some sudden feeling or emotion is
called an interjection. It is used to
express an outburst .
e.g. 1. Alas ! He is no more.
2. Hurrah ! We have won the match.
