Case 2

Example of flat managerial structure

Cost Reductions - Fewer managers and fewer management levels mean the company is paying fewer people and having less overhead for office space. Cost reductions are achieved in other areas as well with a flat organizational structure because there are fewer people working together more efficiently to get the same or even more work done. Better team sprit. Faster Turn-Around Time for Decision Making - With fewer levels of management, managers have more people reporting to them and delegate more decision making. Manager may utilize teams for projects or production work and empower the teams to make decisions or challenge them to present one or two best options to managers when decisions are needed, or they may delegate lead employees to make day-to-day decisions within certain approved parameters. This eliminates the delays and lag time of waiting for decisions from busy managers and keeps the work of the organization moving forward smoothly.

Improved

Communications - More layers of management and support staff requires information to pass through more people, increasing the possibility of distortion. The more filtered the communication, the more chance for lost time and money. With a flat organizational structure, there are fewer managers to process communications. Managers and employees alike are working with communications differently and more efficiently, saving time, money, and decreasing the decision making and communications processes.
