Orientation - Definition and meaning Purpose of orientation Orientation program Evaluation of orientation programme
Definition: Orientation is a systematic and planned introduction of employees to their jobs, their co-workers and the organization. It is also called as Induction. Orientation is designed to provide a new employee with the information he/she needs to function comfortably and effectively in the organization.
To reduce start up costs (associated with job learning). To reduce anxiety. To reduce employee turnover. To save time for supervisor & colleagues.
The idea is to make the new employees feel at home in the new environment. Expedite proficiency.
1. Orientation checklist, employee handbook and orientation program. 2. Communicate pride in the company by giving each new employee an item with the company logo on it. 3. Encourage communication, and a sense of importance, by inviting new employees to have coffee or lunch with the company owner or a senior manager.
4. Encourage new employees to sample the product and or service that the company sells (i.e. Some restaurants offer new employees a complimentary meal).
5. Reduce the stress of starting a new job by pairing new employees with a buddy (a more senior or experienced team member) that can help coach them through the first few weeks on the job.
Here are some ideas to consider, when devising the orientation program: 1.The MIND thinks in IMAGES not WORDS!
Games can provide for an informal and fun orientation. For example: Photo match after the tour. Signature hunt.

Smoking Regulations When and where smoking is permitted. Public Transport, Car Parking Location of bus stops and railway stations. Telephone Rules How to use the telephone system. Taking of messages Rules of usage, ie, personal calls
Hours of Work Starting & Finishing times Meal & tea breaks Overtime arrangements Pay Procedures time & method of payment.
Timing:1pm - 4pm
Inner circle and outer circle Inner circle will contain old employees and the outer circle with new employees. Both the circle will face each other. When both the circles are ready, they will move clockwise direction and introduce themselves to each other for 1min.
Birthday Game Have the group stand and line up in a straight line. After they are in line, tell them to rearrange the line so that they are in line by their birthday. January 1 on one end and December 31 at the other end. The catch is that they must do all this without talking or writing anything down.
People Knots Game Everyone sits on the floor in a circle with legs extended toward the middle. Each person grabs two others hands and holds them. The hands cannot be those of either person sitting on your sides and also cannot be the two hands of the same person. Now, everyone stands up and untangles each other into a single circle, without letting go of the hands you have.
