shock(8/10)

AEI603.58 1
OBJECTIVES
On completion of this period, you would be able to
know …

• Physiological effect
• Macro shock
• Micro shock

AEI603.58 2
RECAP

• Computer assisted medical imaging

• Medical diagnosis & decision making
• Computer applications in patient monitoring
• Computer applications in Patient management
• Computer applications in Hospital administration

AEI603.58 3
PHYSIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF
ELECTRICAL CURRENTS

• At 1 mA current shock a faint tingling sensation is

felt.

• At 5 mA current shock nerves are stimulated and the

sensation becomes painful

AEI603.58 4
PHYSIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF
ELECTRICAL CURRENTS (contd.1)

• At 10-20 mA current shock the muscle fibers are

kept in depolarized condition.

• Above 20 mA Respiratory paralysis and pain

• At 80-1000 mA Ventricular and heart fibrillation

AEI603.58 5
PHYSIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF
ELECTRICAL CURRENTS (contd.2)
• At about 6A or more the heart goes in to a
sustained muscular contraction and also temporary
respiratory paralysis.

• At levels much above 6 A massive damage is

caused to human body.

AEI603.58 6
ELECTRICAL SHOCK

AEI603.58 7
MACRO SHOCK

Definition

• Macro shock is an electric shock due to the contacts applied

to the exterior of the body.

AEI603.58 8
MACRO SHOCK

• Hospital patients may be exposed to macro shock

from defective electric devices such as lamps and
defective ECG machines
• Minimization of macro shock can be accomplished
by effective application of conventional safety
methods

AEI603.58 9
MICRO SHOCK
Definition

• A physiological response to a current applied to the

surface of the heart that reserves in un wanted
stimulation like muscle contraction or tissue injury
is called Microshock

AEI603.58 10
MICRO SHOCK
• Micro shock is a much more serious hazard than
macro shock.
• It applies to every patient who has a lead or electrical
conductor from the interior of the heart
• Minimization of micro shock requires a carefully
designed and controlled electrical environment for the
patient.
• For the patient safety any current passing through a
patient should be limited to less than 5 mV

AEI603.58 11
SUMMARY

We have discussed

• Physiological effect
• Macro shock
• Micro shock

AEI603.58 12
QUIZ
• A massive damaged is caused by the current

a) 20 mA

b) Above 6A

c) 5 mA

d) All of the above

AEI603.58 13
IMPORTANT QUESTIONS

• List the physiological effects

• Define macro shock and micro shock
• Distinguish between, macro shock and micro shock
