interface with a computer and use its
resources

CCP105.21 4
USER O/S
COMPUTER

CCP105.21 5
OPERATING SYSTEM

 Collection of various programs

 Helps in booting a computer
 Manages the resources of the computer
 Help the user to fulfill his requirements

CCP105.21 6
TYPES OF OPERATING SYSTEM

 Single-user operating system

• with character-user interface

Ex: MSDOS
• with graphic-user interface
Ex: MS windows
 Multi-user operating system
Ex: UNIX

CCP105.21 7
Functions of disk Operating System

 Coordinates the various resources of the

computer and sees to it that they perform
their desired tasks as desired by users.

CCP105.21 8

 Input/Output Management
 Directory Management
 House Keeping
 Execution of Binary Files
 Utility Functions
 Job Accounting

CCP105.21 9
Device Management-I
 It recognizes the various hardware units connected to it
 Communicates to them as per the instructions.
 It checks the memory unit.

CCP105.21 10
Device management-II

It checks the interface units like:

• The key board,

• The printer,
• The existence of hard disk,
• Floppy disk drives for read/write operations.

CCP105.21 11
Memory Management-I
 The memory of the computer is the primary memory
where in it stores the operating system.
 Allocates memory for storing user-instruction data.

CCP105.21 12
Memory management-II
 The operating system manages the memory
allocation to the various programs’ data
 The Operating system sees to the process required
on the data according to the instruction by moving
required data to the various registers.

CCP105.21 13
Input/Output Management

 It manages the transfer of user input to the memory unit

and the output to the designated Devices like VDU and
printer or to the storage devices.
 Read/write operations from and to various units are
controlled by the operating system.

CCP105.21 14
DIRECTORY MANAGEMENT

 It helps create root and subdirectories on the floppy

disks or hard disks
 It records details of the stored information for retrieval.

CCP105.21 15
HOUSE KEEPING
 It helps in maintaining an orderly management of disks.
 It includes
 Deletion of files

 Copying of files

 Formatting disks

 Maintaining links to the various pieces of files

 Reorganizing the fragmented files.

CCP105.21 16
Execution of binary files

 Execution of binary files (executable files) is the

important function of the operating system.

CCP105.21 17
Utility Functions
 The operating system has many utility programs.
 It helps the user in making use of the system effectively.
