5
EC105.73
PRINCIPLE

• Magnetic effect of the permanent

magnet superimposed with the magnetic
effect of the operating current.

• The direction of the currents determine

the position of the armature.

6
EC105.73
DESCRIPTION

• Two electromagnets are placed side by side

with the pole pieces facing each other.

• Between the pole pieces a small soft iron

armature is mounted on a brass spindle.

• A U-shaped permanent magnet is fixed such

that its pole pieces are opposite to that of
armature.

7
EC105.73
DESCRIPTION

• The permanent magnet produces a magnetic flux.

• A tongue is mounted on the spindle carrying the

armature.

• This tongue moves between two contact terminals

Spacing(S) and Marking(M).

8
EC105.73
WORKING

• Current in BA direction strengthens the right

hand core and weakens the left.

• A marking contact M is made.

9
EC105.73
WORKING. ,

• Current in AB direction causes the tongue to

make the spacing contact (S).

• Permanent magnetic flux is called polarising flux.

10
EC105.73
NON-POLARISED RELAY FIG.3

11
EC105.73
PRINCIPLE

• Operates the flow of current.

• Current flows in the coil.

• Force is exerted on the armature.

• Armature attracted to the core pulling the two

contacts together.

12
EC105.73
DESCRIPTION

• Consists of a pair of coils wound on two cores.

• Armature with springs fitted close to the cores

with an adjustable air gap.

13
EC105.73
WORKING

• Current passed through the cores.

• Flux produced.

• Armature pulled towards the cores.
