EC105.85 1
OBJECTIVES

After completion of this period, you

Would be able to understand:

• Principle of dynamic microphone.

• Construction of dynamic microphone.

• Working of dynamic microphone .

• Applications of dynamic microphone .

EC105.85 2
Principle of moving coil microphone

• It works on the principle of electromagnetic Induction.

• When a conductor (coil) cuts the magnetic field, an e.m.f

will be induced in the conductor (coil).

• This e.m.f forms as output of microphone.

EC105.85 3
Construction

• Moving coil microphone is also known as dynamic

microphone.

• It consists of magnet, diaphragm and coil.

• An E-shaped permanent magnet consists of both south

pole and north pole that produces a constant magnetic

field.

EC105.85 5
• A thin aluminum diaphragm is fixed to the magnet with

springs.

• A coil made up of aluminum ribbon suspended

between North and South poles.

• Whole unit is encased and a hole is provided to make

free from atmospheric effects.

• When sound waves strikes the diaphragm it moves and

hence the coil moves in and out of the magnetic field.

• This movement of diaphragm changes the flux through

coil and hence the e.m.f is induced in coil.

• This induced e.m.f is proportional to sound pressure

variations.

EC105.85 12
Characteristics

• Sensitivity : about 30 µ Volts.

• Signal to noise ratio : 30 db.

• Frequency response : 60 Hz to 8 KHz.

• Directivity : Omni- directional.

• Output impedance : Low, 25 Ohms.

EC105.85 13
Advantages

• No external bias supply is required.

• It can withstand extreme temperature variations and

humidity.

EC105.85 14
Disadvantages

• It has poor sensitivity.

EC105.85 15
Applications

• Used to pick up sound from large-orchestra.

• Used in broad casting.

• Used in applications where long cables are required.

SUMMARY
• Moving coil microphone is also known as Dynamic
microphone.

• It works on the principle of electro magnetic induction.

• It consists of a permanent magnet, diaphragm and coil

which is suspended between North and South poles.

• E.m.f is induced in the coil, when sound waves strikes the

diaphragm.

• It is widely used in PA system, music and broad cast .
